What helped you the most during labor?

I'm starting to get my bag together for the hospital. I have a lot of basic stuff (toiletries, sweats, camis, nursing bra, nursing pads, etc) for an overnight stay plus I'll have the baby's going home clothes, blanket, etc.

In addition I'm trying to think what I can bring for labor to help with pain and/or as a distraction. I'm thinking tennis balls for back labor, massage oils, laptop  (I figure I can play music). The hospital has birthing balls, heating pads and ice packs and  the jacuzi. Of course we have all the techniques we learned in class- focusing, breating, massage, different positions, etc.

So what helped all you ladies the most? Is there anything else I should bring or things to try and keep in mind?

Re: What helped you the most during labor?

  • I didn't use any of the stuff I had set for labor. First, my DH only grabbed a few of the things (it was an emergency early induction) and second I just had no patience for it. When I was miserable I was miserable and when I was fine I just played around on my phone. NO reading, no tv, definitely didn't have the patience to watch a movie.  I'd keep the tennis balls. I didn't use them, but my sister needed them for both of her births and she swore by them. For me, the simplest comfort was the most important. I had to have a ponytail holder and my chapstick. Oh, and I didn't want anything to eat, and then they told me I couldn't, but I needed some kind of taste in my mouth so Lifesavors we're a lifesavor :P The biggest thing I wished I had, but luckily hospital had them, was nursing pads which are on your list. I had the nursing tank, but no pads and I just felt gross. One thing to keep in mind for after, is snag some of those great pads an the ice packs the nurses give you. Take as many as you can :) Snag a hospital baby blanket too :P They are so much larger then regular receiving blankets and they are the best for swaddling. Oh, and if you are doing a babybook, bring that for foot prints!
  • I didn't even open my hospital bag.  My biggest support was my husband.  He was my rock.

One thing I didn't think of was cute hats for the baby for pictures.  Many hospitals have generic ones that don't appeal to me as much as more personal ones.  I was thankful that York Hospital had volunteers who knit babies homemade hats.  The pictures came out so cute with that touch of love.

  • I also used nothing I brought.

We used the laptop here and there and I was happy to have my makeup so I could primp before my c-section for pictures. Oh, and I brought my teddy bear which helped me (as always) stay propped in a position I liked for sleeping. Otherwise I read nothing, listened to no music, watched no movies, did no interneting during my non-progressive labor, or anything.

I was glad to have comfy PJs with a button top that made breastfeeding easier and made me feel human.  Pack light!

  • As PPs said, I didn't use anything we brought for labor.  My MIL brought lotion and massaged my feet for me, which was great.  Also, as Meghan21 said snag as much stuff as you can.  The receiving blankets are great!  Anything that they put in the bassinet is yours.  Also, make sure to get an extra bag of the post labor goodies, its helpful to have the big pads and ice packs.  I am so excited for you!

  • The iPod with my hypno affirmations and relaxations! I tuned everyone out and even dozed for awhile :) Everything else was still in the car, I was in denial about being in labor BIG time.

  • I used chapstick and lollipops. I had a tennis ball but I didn't use it; I actually hated DH touching me when I was in labor. I didn't listen to any music or read any magazines. I watched a tiny bit of tv in early labor (I had an induction). The thing that helped the most in labor was my epidural. Big Smile

  • I second the lifesavers! I was admitted 27 hrs before leaks was born, and couldn't eat, and I hadn't eaten much that day before, I was starved! The sugar from those and popsicles made me less cranky. I wish I'd packed another pair of pj's, we were in for 2 extra days and I felt icky in the same clothes. Chocolate & snacks for after babe is born:) As far a labor goes the pitocin & nubain made me loopy so I checked out and didn't get to use all the thing's I'd intended like the tub & the ball, plus they made me stay on the monitors :(

I had an intrathecal, but, yes, that was the best thing:)

  • Go to work first, that is a great distraction Stick out tongue

Once I got to the hospital, I really just focused on breathing and using hubby like we were taught to (for leaning against, etc).  I was texting a lot for a while, but as the contractions got more intense, I pretty much said to hubby, "turn this fvcking thing off, I can't do both".

My labor was fast and quick, so even though I planned for using the laptop, I never got to use it.  So yes, pack light.  We live close enough to the hospital where DH could go home and get whatever I needed.  I loved the laptop for watching a movie and stuff after she was born, but for labor, I only had time for techniques.

I'm also telling you to take whatever is offered to you!!  Pads, ice packs, soap, lotion, diapers, wipes, NASAL SUCKER, ....everything :)

  • I agree that I didn't use much of what I brought. Jolly Ranchers, chapstick, hair elastic, headband and a supportive hubby (and various pain relief methods) were all I used. And my labor was long- 24 hours, 3 hrs pushing.

As for things to do- I tried the tub, but it was awkward and annoying to me. I think we had the tv on for part of the time as background noise/distraction, but if there wasn't something I was in the mood for it was irritating to me. Walking was good for a while.

  • I didn't really pack much for labor-- I did bring a back massager thingy that I had lying around the house but didn't have back labor. I spent most of my labor on the toilet.... I used the birthing ball and the tub also but really, the toilet was my friend. Sorry, totally gross.

Definitely stock up on the supplies they give you at the hospital though! My labor was pretty quick and they let me eat dinner after I was induced. It was nice to have the snacks that I packed though because the food was horrible at my hospital.

  • Like others have already said, i didn't use much of anything that I packed, but was very glad to have my own comfy loose pants to put on the day after while at the hospital.

  • I had a crazy short labor, since I came in 8cm dilated and didn't really bring much in regards to helping me through labor. Having a super supportive husband and a great nursing team were a Godsend, to say the least. Honestly, the most significant help I had getting through labor was an epidural, but that is a personal decision. As far as post delivery, just make sure you have lots of comfy clothes that aren't constricting, and like PPs said, get all of the ice packs and mammoth pads that you can from the nurses before you leave.

  • I nested and facebooked for a while during my labor, the laptop was a good distraction.  Tums!  I had a terrible heartburn during my labor, and they have to get a doctor's order for tums to give them to you which took forever.

  • Thanks ladies! Sounds like not many of you used the stuff you packed. I think I'll still bring everything though just so I have it just in case. Definitely need to pick up some life savors or something though I guess or maybe some candy canes! :)
  • I don't know if you're planning to bf, but I brought my boppy too, I forgot to mention, that, and lanolin.
