school advice

i found out i have only 5 more classes and i will be finished with my AA and will be able to go to a four year college next fall. my hubby and i are thrilled and so is my family. my problem: all the classes i have left are really hard (which okay i can deal and do it) and there are flex classes for the math portion, but the math classes are at 12:30-1:45 and i have to go to work at 4. i live 30 minutes from school and this will be an everyday occurrence where i go to school, get home eat, get ready for work and go. i have to take a class during the summer already which okay fine, but last semester because i apparently make too much though not enough to officially not be considered for financial aid i barely got enough for books so if i add more classes i might not be able to afford the books either yet i keep having this nagging feeling in my head that i need to do this and do more classes this semester yet so far i have heard that i should wait for summer to finish the rest of the courses and it doesn't help the case that for one class i need field work too. help!!!

ps if this makes any sense to anyone since i went kinda back and forth then i applaud you.

Re: school advice

  • I am all for renting books.

rent a text.com is one of them; far better than buying a book you will only use once.

There are other book rental sites, too -- google and see who else you can find.

I think it is fifty bucks to rent per semester; that is a huge savings.

  • Find out what books you will need and rent them from barnes and nobles. The fees also include the cost of shipping them back when done.

  • its more i am afraid to take more classes yet i'm afraid not to. i want to finish school so bad and i'm so close i can taste it. yet if i do more classes i might not be able to pay for it or the books but if i don't, i feel like i'm shorting myself and i want to finish classes quickly. maybe i'm being impatient.

Sit down with all the course fees and what you think the texts for each course will cost you and figure it out from there.

You may be getting impatient but if you can't afford it you may stress yourself out if you go for it, and then you might not pass a few of the courses and that would not be good!

  • Are you sure you don't qualify for financial aid in the form of loans? Almost everyone qualifies for those. See the Financial Aid office at your university for assistance on that.

Also, I'd pack a small cooler for the car. I'd go to class, hang out on campus doing homework for a while (or take a nice walk, etc.), eat lunch/dinner there, and then go to work. Doing so may cut down on your stress quite a bit.

You mentioned that the classes are going to be pretty hard.  If it were me, I'd take less classes so I can really focus on them and do well without the additional stress of too many hard classes.  I don't mean that as a cop-out, I mean it in a "don't over-stress/extend yourself" way.

I know you want to be done as soon as possible, but you want your sanity intact too, right?

  • Have you searched for the books on amazon or other similar sites? Talk to people who have taken the classes already, in many situations I've been able to purchase the previous edition of a book and had no issues with it, I'm talking 100 dollar text books for 10 bucks. If nothing else I usually save 10 bucks over the school book store price if I can't buy a previous edition.
  • I've had the best luck renting books at chegg.com. They seem to have the most selection available when it comes to rental sites. I added it all up (I've been in part time college since 2009), and compared what the rentals vs. buying books from the school has saved me - over $1500.
    Oh, FFS.
  • mysimon.com will give the the website with the lowest price.

Also ask your profs if the books are on reserve in the library = free rental!  Just brown bag your dinner and stay late a couple of days a week after class to read then go straight to work
