Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Ok, so this might be TMI, but I need advice (and to know if this is normal).

This morning, DH and I were having sex - nothing too extreme, pretty "vanilla." After we tried a new angle (hubby put a pillow under my bottom - done it before, no problems) it suddenly started to hurt - bad. Not burn hurt, but like the worst period cramps I've ever had. The pain was definitely in my uterus. We tried a new position, but the pain didn't go away and I had to tell DH that we needed to stop. At the time, I didn't know if the pain was from my stomach (like really bad gas pains) or my uterus so I went into the bathroom and sat on the toilet. At that point, I got really flushed and my limbs started tingling like I was going to pass out from the pain. Then I started dry-heaving over the toilet (because it hurt so bad). I ended up lying on the cold tile floor, curled up in a ball, moaning in pain.

Somehow, I managed to swallow some crackers so I could take some ibuprophen. I tried to move, but whenever I used my ab muscles, the pain got worse. Oh, and that was another thing - the pain almost seemed to come in waves. For a few minutes I would think things were getting better but then the pain would get worse. The only way I could somewhat lessen the pain was if I laid on my back with my knees pulled up towards my chest - like putting pressure on my abdomen.

DH helped me to the bed where I laid in the fetal position and waited about 45 minutes until the meds kicked in. And once they did, I didn't have any more problems throughout the day.

The whole time, my husband was beside himself. He (like most men) wants to fix something that's broken. Well, I was "broken" and there wasn't much he could do to "fix" me.

Here are some side facts:

  • hubby and I have been having sex for about a year now and nothing like this has happened before. I usually enjoy myself whenever we have sex.
  • I'm not pregnant
  • I'm in the middle of my cycle
  • My husband is not hung like a moose. Even though he's the only guy I've slept with, I'd say he's pretty average.
  • We have a pretty active sex life (newlyweds, what can I say?). I'd say probably 3-5 times a week.
Any advice? Has this happened to anyone else? And what should I tell my husband? He was really freaked out and even told me (more than once while I was moaning in pain) that we were never going to have sex again. I know he was joking, but I don't want him to be afraid of hurting me. Any advice or ideas would be great. Thanks!

Re: Has this ever happened to anyone else?

  • That sounds alot like what happened to me several times over the last few years. It was really bad about two years ago, happened 5-6 times during the year. Although It never happened to me during sex, the same symptoms were there. I had to go to the hospital finally. It turned out to be cysts on my uterus. When they burst, the cramps, tingling, pain, passing out would happen.

Just my experience. Hope its not that because they're awful. Hopefully you just had some kind of muscle spasm or something!

  • See your gyn asap. What you are describing is not normal.

You could have a cyst or a fibroid or even an endometrioma -- your doc needs to do a transvaginal ultrasound and possibly a hysteroscopy to see what's going on.

YOu may also have a kidney stone. See your doc asap.

If it turns out you have a cyst and it needs removal, I just had the surgery; I had an endometrioma.

The surgery was by way of a lapaprotomy; the surgery is less invasive than the typical. it's one day surgery. it all worked out fine for me.

  • Thanks everyone! Quick question - do the cysts like you describe affect fertility? Or are they pretty harmless and just need removal?

  • I've been on BC for over a year now (and for 3+ years before a yr break). Is it possible that it was just a muscle spasm?

  • TBH, I never had a muscle spasm like the one you're describing.  As I was reading, I initially was thinking kidney stone, but it really could be any of the things the PPs mentioned.  Hope you get answers when you go to the doctor!
