Die Cut machines

Hello ladies! I have begun to pick up my crafting lately and really am wanting to get a die cut machine. I originally was going to get the Cricut but then learned of the Silhouette that allows for use with out cartridges. That is the way I would really like to go. I found this website http://die-cutting-machines-review.toptenreviews.com/ and am currently trying to decide between the Silhouette and the Craftwell Ecraft.

I've gone back and read some posts about the Sil and looked at the FAQ's but hadn't seen anything about the Ecraft. Anyone have any info on it good or bad? There were a couple reviews on Amazon that kind of concerned me.

Also those with a Sil one of my concerns of the fact it doesn't seem like it's really meant to cut much besides card stock. Anyone try using it for other things?

Any advice on either of these would be greatly appreciated!

I primarily use my Silhouette with fabric- you need to use interfacing before you cut, but you don't have to order theirs (I did the first time, then googled a bunch of blogs for substitutes and my machine and cuts have been just fine).  I have also used it for cardstock and normal paper.

  • What about for materials heavier than card stock?

  • What kind of material?  If you want to cut things like metal, corrugated cardboard, etc. you'll need to get an actual die based machine like a Sizzix Big Shot.

I would say the fabric + interfacing is heavier than cardstock.  I wouldn't use anything too thick because of the way the Silhouette feeds/ cuts.

  • The main one that comes to mind is vinyl as well as fabric.

  • Oh, yeah, the Silhouette definitely cuts vinyl.  I haven't done it yet but I ordered some and intend on using it for holiday gifts.

  • I thought of another...what about foam and felt?

  • I am fairly sure foam and felt fall into the Sizzix category as well- you have to cut with actual metal dies to get results.

Cutting machines cut with a tiny knife- like an exacto- so it will be too difficult to cut through anything very thick.
