I might be confusing you with someone else on this board (sorry in advance if I am), but I don't think so... aren't you going to Iceland soon? We just went in May so thought I'd share a few recommendations:
1. We did the Golden Circle Tour with a super jeep company and it was way more expensive (about $330 per person) but it was better than being shuttled stop-to-stop on a huge tour bus (about $80 per person I think). I am pretty sure we used Nature Explorer, but if you're interested I can find out who we used. Given what I would imagine the weather might be like now, I'm not sure I'd want to drive around Iceland - if there's no snow you're probably fine, but if there is snow I wouldn't drive. Golden Circle is kind of cool, but we liked going off-roading on the glacier the best. Pack warm clothes, you will freeze with the wind!
2. We did the snorkel tour to Silfra and I loved it - went through dive.is. If you go, just wear jeans or thermals and a long-sleeved shirt without a big collar (no bulky sweater collars), because you wear your full clothing under the dry suit, which you wear under the wetsuit. Even though the thought of snorkeling in 35-degree water terrified me, you really didn't feel it anywhere but your lips and it was really cool.
3. If you're looking for restaurants that are good, we really liked Tapas Restaurant (original name, no?), we ate at the Lobster House which is also highly recommended (I honestly didn't like their lobster that much because it was all small tails and one of them was kind of mushy which I thought was disgusting), and there's a fish house nearby that we couldn't get into that was supposed to be good. Also, the Pearl (revolving restaurant set atop water storage containers) is supposed to be good.
4. To get from the airport to Reykjavik, take the Fly Bus. Not a taxi. We didn't know about the Fly Bus, and we took a taxi into town and it was about $125 one way. The Fly Bus is like, $30 each person or something. You can stop at the Blue Lagoon on the way into town if you want (Fly Bus offers the tour).
5. I thought the Blue Lagoon was way over-rated, personally. If you go, you might consider taking along some sort of sandal / water shoe if you're like me and super grossed out by stepping in gunk. There's a ton of silica stuff all over the bottom of it and there's a TON of hair matted in the silica, so it made me want to vom. The water is hot but if I went to Iceland I don't think I'd go back. I think it's like $60 a person to go from the airport, stop at the Blue Lagoon, and then get transported back to Reykjavik. Also I don't know if it was just me or what, but my hair got FRIED from the water so if you go, maybe try to keep your hair dry - though I color mine so maybe that was part of the problem.
6. If you could see a show at the new opera house, that might be cool.
7. There's a really cute lake in downtown Reykjavik right near the Parliament House that has nice trails around it if you're a runner. They're paved but it's easy and it seems lots of people run there.
If you're not the one going to Iceland, sorry for posting this but I think you are. Have fun - I really liked the country (hubby liked it okay, preferred Paris), and the people are super friendly. Hopefully you'll get to see the Northern Lights? That would be incredible! ![]()
Re: **uwhuskygirl**
Yep, I'm going. Good memory!
Thanks for the post this is really helpful. I know h booked some super jeep volcano tour, I'll have to ask him who he went through.
It's disappointing to hear the lobster house wasn't good. We were planning on having "thanksgiving" dinner there. I'll definetly check out the other places though.
I've been keeping my eye on the weather and I think it's going to be hit or miss with the northern lights. I'm so bummed because that was the whole point for the trip.
I know it was a long shot, but hopefully things will be clear one night we're there.
We're going to stop by the blue lagoon on the way out to the airport. Thanks for the heads up about sandals or water shoes. The hair in the silica part really grosses me out.
Is reykjavik a pretty dressy place or can I get away with jeans and casual clothes? Thanks again!
So we were only in Reykjavik Sun-Thurs, so we didn't go out to the bars (they appear to be CRAZY and things go super late, until like 6 AM, from Wed-Sat. it seems), but Reykjavik is not a real dressy place, IMO. I wore jeans, boots, and sweaters / long-sleeve t-shirts. I never felt like I wasn't dressed well enough. You will see that there's a TON of sweaters / knit stuff for sale in Iceland but it's crazy expensive (like $200+ for a sweater) with the exchange rate.
You could try the Lobster House as a lot of people really like it, but the lobster they serve is pretty small (tails were like the size of tiger prawns) and like I said, some of mine were mushy. If I were you, I'd try to get reservations to the Fish Company for dinner: http://www.fiskfelagid.is/English/About_FishCompany - we couldn't get in as they were all booked up, but maybe e-mail your hotel to see if they can make a reservation for you now? We waited until the last minute and couldn't get in but maybe your hotel can get you in ahead of time.
Good luck with the weather! Even if you don't see the Northern Lights I think you'll like Iceland - I really thought it was (is) a great country!
Great! I was hoping jeans, sweaters and boots would be fine... and long underwear.
I just emailed the fish house. Hopefully they can get us in. Thanks again for all of the recs!
