Tough Mudder review & PIPs (long)

Tough Mudder lives up to it's name- it's very tough and VERY muddy! We ran at the Badlands Off-road park in Indiana, so the entire course was sand, loose rocks or very hard, slippery rocks and tons of mud!  I made it between miles 4-5 before I had to quit due to getting very sick and going into shock. BF and the rest of my team were able to complete the rest of the race- 1 other guy quit around mile 10 due to a serious knee injury. As disappointed as I was to not finish, I was glad that I tried but my health was far more important than trying to get to the end.

In the first 4 miles I was able to do: kiss of mud x2 (army crawl in sticky mud under barbed wire), mud mile (exactly what it sounds like), Berlin walls (set of 2 8-10 foot walls), cargo net (turds nest on the tm website), frozen forest (run through ankle-waist deep river/stream), over and under some big ass logs that got progressively taller, Chernobyl jacuzzi (ice bath in a 40yd dumpster where you have to swim under a board to get out - they had just dumped a pallet of ice in before my team went through. this was probably the beginning of the end for me), climbed a giant mud hill (x3 or 4), boa constrictor (go through small tubes into water with barbed wire over it then crawl through another tube to get out), walk the plank (jump 15ft into ice water then swim 50 yards to get out - i skipped this one because i felt so sick and thought i wouldn't be able to swim out), lots and lots of sticky mud where I got stuck a few times in waist deep sections and had to be pulled out by teammates & lots more freezing water.

I remember seeing the 4 mile marker and telling bf I felt really sick but wanted to continue, but as soon as we got the to the next first aid station I knew something wasn't right. I ended up being really sick (vomiting, shaking, dizzy) and had a low body temperature. My team all agreed after the race I made a good decision to quit when I did. They all were able to finish and earned their orange headbands! I was able to get warmed up and changed into dry clothes back at the start/finish area and was able to see my team cross the finish line.  What I was able to do was fun & very challenging. Here's a few pics, we didn't take many because we were either super muddy or too cold to even care about anything other than getting dry clothes. We did carry a camera on the course but I didn't get it developed yet and BF wore a helmet camera for the race to record the obstacles and some of the running!

Re: Tough Mudder review & PIPs (long)

  • Holy crap! DH and I did the Gladiator Rock & Run a few weeks ago. It sounds similar to the Tough Mudder, but it was only a 5K. We had a ton of mud, but no swimming in ice water, the deepest it got was knee high. We've thought about doing a TM, but aren't in any kind of shape for it now.

    How long was it to the finish line?

  • My team finished in 4.5 hours. They waited for 10-15 minutes at 2 separate obstacles and there were plenty of areas where you absolutely could not run. This course was listed as 12 miles with 26 obstacles. The best way to train is run hills- TONS and TONS of hills. Then take ice baths and make sure you go underwater and be able to pull yourself up- there were very few obstacles that you could do alone- you NEED teammates or other people to help you or you'll never make it!

  • Wow! Tough Mudder is no joke. I did the MS Mud Run 10k & I thought that was way too long!

  • Thanks everyone! I felt better the next day- basically, my body went into shock. The doctor said I could have been sick with something else and made me weak or just the cold from the ice water could have set in and started to shut my body down. Either way, I'm fine and feel normal, I just needed to warm up. I'm glad I tried to run but I don't think I'll try this one again. I still had fun and was disappointed to drop out but it was definitely a smart idea.
