AWing my husband
Every two years there's a promotional process in order to qualify for promoting to Lieutenant. Last time around was right after our wedding, and it was a written exam. DH didn't study as much as I thought he should, and he failed. This time around there was a panel interview and chief's interview. Once they do those they get ranked on a list, and when a position becomes available, the fire chief picks one of the top three candidates for the position. Usually he goes in order, unless someone has really messed up.
DH got a call today with his ranking. He's number TWO on the list out of 10 candidates, and he has the least experience out of everybody! We have to wait for positions to open but there is a really good chance of two positions opening in the next two years. 
I am so proud of him!
