Older toddler cold question

What do you give, or do with your LO when you see a cold starting, or lingering?

I know the baby things to do, but wondering if I'm missing something that may help now that she's getting older. We have the vaporizer, Vicks, ibuprofen, boogie suckie/tissues, steam. Am I missing something that could help rid congestion and cough?

Re: Older toddler cold question

  • We were at the pedi last week with our 14 month old - same instructions as when she was an infant, which is everything you listed. The only thing you didn't list that he suggested was a drink that was a combination of Sleepytime tea, lemon juice and honey to help with the cough.

  • You're not missing anything.

Ok. Thanks. Just wishing there was something more I could do, and afraid of it turning into another undiscovered ear infection. We're in the middle of changing pedi offices and I don't really want to bring her in if it's nothing.

  • I know not everyone's dr would agree with this, but Mads' pedi actually recommended a small dose of children's Benadryl for her (he figured it out based on her weight) at night for a couple of nights when she had a really bad cough a few weeks ago.  She hadn't sleeping because she was up coughing all night and crying and therefore wasn't getting her body the rest it needed to get better.  We tried the Benadryl for a couple of nights, and while she did still cough sometimes it definitely helped and she slept through the night each time.... her cold & cough quickly improved after that.

Again, I know everyone & everyone's dr is different, but it did work well for us.  And I hear you on the ear infections- we seem to have the queen of them in our house lately :(  Good luck!!

Our Pedi has done this too (and our in-house Doctor agrees, lol).  There is nothing they can take during the day (like Claritin) but a small dose of Benadryl at night I find really helps when the cold/cough/sneezing/drip is keeping her up and making her miserable.  It will knock them on their asss though so be prepared to wake up to a kid with dried snot literally all over.  Consider yourself warned :)

  • Benadryl is a good idea for the cough/drip. I may give that a shot tonight. We've used it before when she came down with hives, and of course in true Alex fashion, it did nothing to help her sleep. I was so excited about that side effect when we finally were given a medical reason to try it, but nope. If she can sleep without coughing though, that would be a help.
  • No other ideas, but we are right with ya.  Abby has had a terrible cough and was up most of last night!  She's going to the doctor tomorrow just to make sure its not in her chest.  The benadryl is a good idea!!
