Re: S/O if you don't have a dryer

  • Although it has become more common here to have a dryer historically it wasn't. The unit we live in is older and it doesn't even have a dryer hook-up or space for one, but there is space and hook-up for a washing machine.

We could put an electric dryer in the garage probably, but it is inconvenient, with a manual roller door being the only entry and it's full of spiders. Plus an electric dryer would be costly to run - electricity isn't cheap here. My PILs have a dryer and have offered me the use of it, and I could go to a laundry-mat if I wanted, but who wants to lug heavy wet laundry around. It's easier to just hang it out on nice days or hang it inside on wet days. I only do big stuff - bedding etc. when the weather forecast is dry. You get used to planning laundry around the weather forecast.

  • We don't have enough space in our kitchen and I wouldn't want my dryer in the living/dining rooms.
  • We don't have one because of space, because of the cost of electrics, because of the cost outlay of buying one, because I love line-drying in the summer, and because I can line dry and not waste energy.

  • I'd love one since we live in super humid land but we don't have much room for one and they're simply not popular here.
  • We have one of those washer/dryer combos. You know, the kind where the 'drying' function is false advertising.

Since we rent, we can't really install one. And, honestly, I air-dried most of my clothes before, so it's not a massive change for me.

  • We rent and our flat didn't come with one. I don't actually know many people here who have one and since it's also impossible to line dry outside, most flats come with drying racks. I'm used to it but I miss fluffy towels!

  • I had the space for a washer, dryer OR dishwasher. Washer for the win!
  • We didn't have one in our old house, there was not really enough room.  People here also don't depend on them like I used to in the US.  I only really use ours when its been raining for like a week straight.  Electricity here is super expensive so I try to avoid using it.  When its hot out, the clothes dry faster on the line anyway.

  • No room.

I did live in a house with one when I first moved in with H.  IT was great.

  • I chose a dishwasher over the dryer and it's been the right decision by miles.  We cook a lot and have people over for dinner often (usually my inlaws) so it's VERY handy.  I have enough room to hang my clothing up on racks and honestly, I like doing it better that way regardless...nicer to my clothing.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • We rent and have no room for one. I would actually prefer to have a dishwasher, but no room for that either. someday, maybe!

Not true, dryers have been common in Australia for as long as they have been popular in America. We just don't use them unless we actually have to. And because we have 240 volt electricity you don't need a special hookup. You just plug it in. It doesn't need a vent, you just open the window or the back door. We also often mount them on the wall, which is why you don't think there's room for one.

  • yea I agree with Knitty - a lot of people do have them here, just don't use them often

most people would be more apt to use their hills hoist - to dry in the sun for free

we got a dryer when we had dd, but MAN is it expensive to use, so I use it as little as possible!!!

  • We have a washer and dryer in the basement (coin op). We live on the 3rd floor so it's a PITA to use them but they are there. We can't have our own in the apartment because there are no hook ups--this building is over 100 years old and just doesn't have them.
  • Because I prefer to let things dry outside when the weather is nice (nothing beats that smell) and for costs/environmental reasons.

    This.

I have never had one and honestly don't see the point.

  • We have a washing machine in the bathroom, and could stack a dryer on top of it. But they're pretty expensive, and we don't really need it. At first, I was like how the heck are we going to survive without a dryer?! But it's not so bad. The only thing that's tough is when we wash sheets and towels, but we either try to spread it out so we don't have too many huge things to hang on the rack, or we use the washer/dryer in our apartment building. We have talked about getting a dryer when we have kids someday, though, because then we would have a lot more laundry.

OMG this. Having a baby has at least doubled our laundry, which is weird since we use disposable diapers and the kid only weighs 6 lbs--how does he generate so much laundry?! But he spits up a lot, so we wash lots of bibs and burp cloths plus the clothes he spits up on (his and ours). Add that to the at least once a day that he pees on me or himself during diaper changes and it's a huge amount of dirty clothes every day!
