Giving the dog her pill

Stella the dog is on antibiotics at the moment, and after 5 days has just worked out what I am doing by hiding the pill in tasty morsels of food.

This morning I tried hiding it in cheese, muffin, butter and meat pattie, with her eating the food and spitting out the pill every time.  I was just going to give up and come back to it later when I tried the cheese again and she ate it.

She must have thought it was some kind of weird tapas style breakfast.

Funny 'ol dog.

Re: Giving the dog her pill

  • Thats funny she took it after so many attemps! How many days does she have to take them?

I've only had to give Ru pills once, for cannel cough when we first adopted him.And he wouldn't take to pill with food. We had to do the open wide and flick method.

  • Sometimes Bristol won't eat his heartworm medicine, so I end up pouring BBQ sauce on it and he just gobbles it right up. Dogs are so silly sometimes!
  • Ozzy is too smart for medicine. He just bloody knows when you put it somewhere. I don't know if it's the way our voice changes, but he knows.  He will chew pieces of beef apart and spit out the pill. The only way to get him to take a pill is to hold his mouth nose up, closed, and rub his throat up and down till he has to swallow. He wriggles and sometimes it takes both of us to make him take a pill. We are joking that he is 11 years old, he has seen it all :)
  • Thank you for the bbq sauce trick Pearl, I used it this morning and it worked like a treat.

One more pill to go tonight.  :)

  • It's funny how it works, I always figure he'll figure it out and just lick it off....
  • Oh goodness, we need to give our cats tapeworm pills, and I'm worried about how they will take it.  Hopefully we don't have to do an entire meal!  :)  Glad she ate it in the end!
