I've been working retail for 9 years now. And for the past 9 years Christmas just kinda sucks. Right now I work for Best Buy, and normally I float around the district at a different store every day (5-45 minute drives) setting up displays of all the new stuff. But because we tend to make a mess while doing that, we can't really do it during the holidays when the stores are busy. So I have to actually go back and work for a store. I had my choice of which store, and what department, so I picked the newest store, which is the most profitable in the district, and I'm cashiering because that is the least involved and easiest to pick up after a year.
I started Monday and we go through the first week in January. Working retail really makes me hate Christmas. The stores are busy, and people are cranky and not logical and they don't want to hear anything you have to say, they just want their way. The only silver lining I've found is that I don't have to cut my Thanksgiving short (Best Buy opens at midnight black Friday) and go to bed because I don't have to be in until 2pm.
So I needs some vibes to just get through to the other side. I feel like the time from now until next year is this bubble of limbo that I just need to survive.
Re: Retail kills my Christmas spirit
Your normal job sounds pretty neat, and it's great that they let you pick which store and which department you wanted to work in over Christmas. They are silver linings to the situation.
Hang in there, it's only 6 weeks to the New Year.
This year won't be so bad because my jobs isn't located in a regular, strip mall, or anything of the life. We're a stand alone store and I really don't think we'll have the big rush on Black Friday. Besides for that, so many stores are offering great sales now. The way traffic is in my town, you'd already think the holidays were in full swing.
Do the creep.
