Hosting Thanksgiving? Share your menu!

We are hosting at our house, and I am really looking forward to it. I'll be starting to brine my bird tonight, and will have to do one more grocery shopping to pick up my vegetables either tomorrow or Wednesday.

Herb Crusted Turkey with Apple Cider Gravy
Oven roasted potatoes, butternut squash, and carrots
Steamed green beans and broccoli
Make-your-own garlic bread (with oven roasted garlic and Italian bread)
Bread stuffing
Cranberry sauce

My mom is bringing meat stuffing (basically the filling of a French meat pie)
My sister's bringing a fruit platter

We'll have apple pie and ice cream for dessert

Re: Hosting Thanksgiving? Share your menu!

  • We're not hosting. As long as my grandmother is alive and well, she will host... her insistance! She's 85 and needs help lifting the 15 pound turkey out of the oven, but she won't let us take over!

Fruit cup appetizer, and usually some egg nog with nutmeg while the turkey is being carved.

She has the traditional turkey with sausage (and bread) stuffing - I'm guessing it's the same as your mom's meat stuffing. She makes gravy from the drippings.
    Mashed potatoes
    Corn
    Sweet potato & apple
    Cranberry sauce
    Baked beans
    Rolls (baked by my stepfather)

Dessert will be pumpkin bread (baked by DH) and apple pie.

But, just to include 1 recipe that fits the theme even though I'm not actually cooking on Thursday...
    Cornbread stuffing:
3 cups cornbread, crumbled (I'm lazy and buy the pre-made from the bakery at Stop & Shop which is quite good!)
3 scallions (whites finely chopped, greens coursely chopped)
    3/8 cup dried cranberries
    3/4 tsp dried sage
    1/2 cup chicken broth
    1.5 Tbsp melted butter
Combine dry ingredients. Drizzle with wet ingredients and toss to coat.
Bake in 375 degree oven for 20 minutes covered. Remove cover and bake 10 minutes.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • My original menu was reservations, but since my mom forgot that I told her we would go with her no matter where and when she went (with my godmother and son), she neglected to tell my godmother to add us to the reservations.  She said she thought we had to go with my inlaws and since we didn't know what was going on with them, she just assumed we couldn't go.  ugh... i said we would go for dessert like my brother in law did wit the inlaws last year if needed, i was not going to not be with my mom.  So to not go on and on, long story short, after trying to accomodate things, I just said we were going to go away for 2 days so no one would have to worry about us.  so needless to say, our menu now may be a car ride to who knows where or last minute reservations to who knows where.

I will add a recipe i love....(not really a measured recipe, just what you like and taste test)

cool whip, fold in can of pumpkin (don't use all of it if not want it too pumpkiny)

add spices: little ginger, cinnamon and cloves (I put more cinnamon than other 2)

serve with ginger snaps (can also use pears and apples)
