I didn't want to hijack the other post, so in response to your question...

We had a combination of A being really big (9lbs 6oz) and my spine cartilage being really narrow and small. The anesthesiologist couldn't get the needle in the right spot for the epi to have any effect on me. I also couldn't get in the optimal position for an epi because of A's size. I was told that the cartilage issue alone is a reason for the problem, and because of that theres a good chance I won't be able to get one this time either. If the baby is big that's just adding to the issue and making the chances even worse.

I had never heard of this before it happened to me, and my OB said it's not very common but I did meet someone a few months ago who has the same issue and she couldn't recieve Epi's for either of her childbirths.

  • Wow!!! That's just crazy!!! Well I guess having a LO makes up for it all! I'm already afraid about the epidural situation this time around. When they broke my water for K I went from 2 to 10 cm within an hour... Prob more like 40 minutes....Thankfully the anesthesiologist was just finishing up a c-section across the hall so I was able to get my epidural b4 I was too late.... This time I'm delivering at a tiny hospital that only has an anesthesiologist at the hospital from 9-4 ...most days.... Monday-Friday only (eek!) Everyone says the 2nd baby goes faster ... And I'm just terrified that my water will break at home and I'll be so far along that there is no way I'll be able to have the epidural. Urgh! The joys of small town living!

  • holy craaap! an hour??!!! Yeah, I'm worried about how fast it will be this time too, but for me thats a good thing if I can't get an epi. I just need to make it to the hospital in time. LOL

Yeah, they say #2 takes half the time as #1 or LESS. So you'll go quick! My L&D was 12 hours exactly so im hoping it takes less than 6 this time.

Don't stress over the possibility of not getting an epi. Honestly, if it was that bad I wouldn't be doing this again. Don't get me wrong....the pain is incredibly bad, but you survive, and if you go as fast as we think you will it will be over before you know it.
