WWAND? (toddler sleep)

Evan has always been a decent sleeper minus some rough patches for illness, teething, growth spurts, etc.  Lately he's been waking up waaaay too early (around 5:30) and he's raring to go.  This leads to him being dog tired at nap time and sleeping for 2-3 hours.  We have to wake him up most days.  Then he's exhausted and asking to go to bed early.  last night he wanted to go to bed at 6:15!

So, how do we adjust his schedule to get him to sleep later?  We've tried putting him to bed later in the past and he still wakes up at the same time.  My thought was to limit the naps to 1.5-2 hours max and DH thinks we put him down later and he'll sleep later.  Honestly, I don't want him up much past 7:30 because we go to bed so early and I need some down time myself :)

I've thought about getting one of those sleep training clocks that tell him when it's ok to get up.

So, WWAND?

  • We ran into this issue and it had to do with the nap.  It's going to be one ugly day, but if you can power through and really shorten the nap, or skip it altogether, it should reset his system.  I was not ashamed to ask my dcp to do this on a day he was with her :)  He'll go to bed earlier that day, but he should also sleep later the next morning.  Hopefully.

Yep,  sorry for your [nap] loss.  Sounds like it's about that time.  :(

I was pretty sure my life was over when Jack dropped his nap.

Good luck!  (Gee, I sound really encouraging, don't I?)

  • Around 2 years old E dropped her nap at home.  We have quiet time now.

She just dropped her nap at daycare.  Nightime was getting to be horrid and it is so much better since.

  • The problem is, he asks to take a nap every day and he always falls asleep for hours if we just do rest time instead of a formal nap.  I don't think he's ready to drop it altogether....or maybe I should say *I'M* not ready for him to drop it. I need him to be napping when the baby comes :)  Wishful thinking.

    Ugh.

  • We start bedtime at 8:30, but E doesn't usually end up asleep until 9:30-10.  We usually go to bed around 10, so it's not much down time in the evening, but she still takes a nap every day.  I'd rather have the nap time than the nighttime actually.  They nap at daycare until they go to kindergarten, so I'm not willing to give it up yet!  She has been getting up earlier too.  I just take a nap then when she does!

  • Hmm.. is there light coming in his windows when he wakes up?  Can you get different curtains?  Kind of a shot in the dark but..?

Unfortunately, no.  We have really dark curtains and it's still pretty dark when he's waking up ;(

  • When you've adjusted his bed times before, how long did you stick with it?  I'd imagine it'd take a solid week or two before his body would get used to the change.  If it were me, I'd start putting him down around 7:30.  Let him take a nap in the afternoon (maybe 2.5 hours, MAX), but stick with that routine for awhile.  If he wakes up in the morning does he get out of bed and come to you, or will he stay in bed?  We leave books by Audrey's bed and she's pretty good about layin quietly and reading until we come and get her (at a reasonable time).

  • He's still in his crib so he just calls out "mommy (or daddy)! up pease!"  We let him go for up to 30 minutes or longer if he seems to be extra content.  He has some toys in the crib.  I might try leaving a book or two in there b/c he would probably read if given the choice.  That's why I was thinking about the trainer clock.  He would learn to read or play quietly until the clock told him it was ok to get up. I know he'd come in our room immediately if he was in his new bed.

When it's during the week Dan will sometimes bring him into bed and they chill before getting up.  We plan to move him soon.  The new room just isn't done quite yet.

We've never really stuck with the later bedtime.  It's usually  just been when we've been busy and he's gotten to bed late b/c of circumstances.  We'll try doing it later and stick with it.  It just sucks trying to keep him awake when I know he's tired.
