Another Car Seat ?

Sorry because I know this is the 100th car seat question this month it seems.  While doing some research and looking at the consumer reports there is a new recommendation to keep kids rear facing until 2 years.  I know we still have quite a while until she is 1 but do you moms plan to keep your kids rear facing until 2?

I plan to go to BRU and try some seats in both of our cars - I have a Cobalt coupe (nothing fits in that car!) and DH has a TaurusX - but I was wanting some recs on seats other than Britax.  We will probably get 2 seats one for my car and one for DH so please rec a good seat for a tiny car!

I have been looking at the seats that are extended use so they will also be a booster seat.  Does a carseat even last that long?  Should I expect DD to distroy the seat before she makes it to a booster?

And my last question is about infant seat bases.  Do they expire?  We have 2 extra bases and thought about keeping those for kiddo #2 but sell the carseat and 3rd base since that does expire.

 Thanks ladies!

Re: Another Car Seat ?

  • -Our kiddo will be RF until at least 2. He's really long (over 36 inches at 17 months), so he has to bend his legs. He's young, flexible, and I see no reason to flip him early.

-I know lots of people recommend the Sunshine Radial (I think that's the name....) for smaller cars, or families who need "skinnier" convertibles.

-I know nothing about extended use seats, but we went the route of infant seat to convertible and then we will go to booster eventually. For us, it was important to buy a seat that had a higher weight limit for a convertible since our child is pretty big.

    -no idea on bases...

  • I'm sure we will RF past two years.  I don't look at by age, I look at the weight of the child, and we have a peanut of a kid.
  • 1.) Yes, DD rear-faced until 2 and then from 2.5 to just slightly after 3. She asked to be turned back rear-facing when she was 2.5. I plan on going to at least 2 with DS, if not longer than that. He is a lot bigger than DD though, so we will see when he outgrows his seat rear-facing.

2.) The only seats that I would recommend (that turn to a booster) are the Evenflo Symphony and the Graco Smart Seat. The others make crappy boosters, so you would want to buy a different booster at that point anyway. My DD will be 4 in January and she is still in her original convertible seat. I plan on keeping her in it until she either outgrows it or it expires. I think it will expire first because she is tiny. I will then move her to something like the Graco Nautilus or Britax Frontier 86, because I don't think she will be physically ready for a booster anytime soon. She is just now 38" and 30lbs. She has at least 10lb until the 40lb minimum for a booster. It could take her years to gain another 10 lbs.

3.) Yes, they expire. It is normally 6 years from the date of manufacture, which should be located on a sticker somewhere on the base.
