Cooking related: inspire me

I got tasked with bringing a salad to Thanksgiving dinner, among a host of other things. What would you put in a salad to go with the rest of a (traditional-ish) t-day dinner?

  • I would do spinach, a light sprinkling of goat cheese crumbles, dried cranberries, and candied nuts (walnuts or pecans) with balsamic dressing. You can swap goat cheese for blue cheese. With the candied nuts, be sure to put a nice dose of cayenne in to give them a kick to help stand out against the heavier/fattier foods on the table.

  • Brilliant! And good call on the cayenne for the candied nuts. Usually they end up being too sweet for my taste, especially with all the sweeter thanksgiving food.

  • is salad not traditional? i have salad with thanksgiving every year. always have.

but i guess if not, then cranberry and pecans can twist it into traditional.

I thought we usually have it but when I brought it up to H, he didn't want to go to the "hassle". Um, we could just buy a bag of mixed greens and not do anything to it and call it good. :/  I put nuts and cranberries in just about everything so the salad is the one thing I will leave plain. :)

Regarding candied nuts - rather than doing candied, you can do "spiced" which will have a little sugar or honey to help it cling to the nut but then it's more about all the spices, which keeps it from being too sweet.

I don't think we have salad with Thanksgiving, but we have lots of other kinds of roasted/cooked vegetables - but it's not like it's a crazy thing to have salad.

ditto pp suggestions, I like things like pears/apples, walnuts/pecans (don't have to be candied), blue cheese etc

  • I make a red radish salad. It's Rachael Ray (but the salad is really good and simple): http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/red-radish-salad-recipe/index.html It's refreshing and light and the red coloring with the green makes for a festive holiday-y look even if the ingredients aren't very holiday-y.
