Are you making Christmas gifts?

Hi all!  Newbie here who just wants to jump in and join the conversation.  Every year since I learned how to knit, I've made a few Christmas gifts for family and friends.  My family is very crafty, so they appreciate these kinds of gifts.  My question to the group is - are you making Christmas gifts this year?  If not, is there a reason?  If so, what are you making?  (any kind of craft, not just knitting)

Re: Are you making Christmas gifts?

  • I am hoping to make some casserole dish covers for my SILs but I don't know if it is going to happen. I made 26 personalized trick-or-treat bags as favors for DS's birthday party and I have had no desire to touch my sewing machine since.

  • I am making my niece an apron and my mother a purse but I am not sure what else yet.
  • I knitted cowls for my female co-workers (a couple of others by request).

Hats for the men and a tie for one of them.

I made a scarf and hat for one nephew, a stocking (not knit) for the other and I am not sure about the rest of family yet.

  • Well, we don't exchange adult gifts in our families (thank goodness my SIL had that BRILLIANT idea a few years ago--it makes life so much easier and less expensive).  We do gifts for the kids.

I will make my own daughter a couple of things (clothes and a toy or so), but that will probably be it.  Why?  TIME...I just don't have enough time and I like to enjoy the holiday season and not feel stressed with deadlines.

I hear that!  This year, I'm not making gifts.  We got married on Oct 30 and I finished the shawl I made for the wedding about two weeks before The Day, so I'm knitted out these days!  Last year, I made a knit stocking for my husband and was planning to make one for me and one for our dog, but his took forever and I didn't get a chance to make the others!  I would try to do those this year, but I just don't have time.  Next year, I will most likely get back to it, but for now... resting my fingers!

I just repinned that project.  It looks like something my aunts would really appreciate!  Not for this year, but maybe next year after I teach myself how to sew!

Pretty cowl!  I may have to attempt that at some point!  :)

I saw the cutest apron at Bed, Bath, and Beyond last night.  It was black and at the top there was a string of pearls and the words "little black apron" in elegant white script.  I was very tempted.

How are you making the purse?  Sew? Knit? Crochet? Something else?  I'm fairly new to the crafty world and am obsessed with all the different ways you can make the same items!

  • Sort of. We're really cutting our gift giving this year in an effort to make the holiday more about family and faith and less abotu gifts. Because of that, we're only getting a few gifts for our kids. We are taking a handmade/thrifted approach to that, though. For my older girls, I'm doing a dress up corner in their playroom and I will be making them some of the clothes. Some will also be from goodwill.

  • I am making tutu's for DD and my 2 nieces, the new sew ones. And I am going to make some homemade art supplies for a friends DD and DD's pre-k class.

Fortunately, I started getting things here and there throughout the year and put them away for DD & DS for Christmas. I hit the Border's closing sale and got a bunch of puzzles & books for dirt cheap months ago. It's nice when they are little they don't have dreams of big ticket items yet.

  • I've been making a bunch of quilted table runners for each season for moms and our sissies.

We will also be making a bunch of crafts with DD to give to the relatives.

We will give our nursery school teachers a couple of gift cards but throw in a couple handmade things too - like roll up Sharpie holders.

  • I have a serious gift giving problem! I can't stop sewing, crocheting, baking and every thing else during the holidays. No one is making me do this. I just go way overboard on what is easily handled. I make tailored wool coats, quilts, sweaters, all kinds of clothes and giant tins of baked goodies. I make new hats and scarves every year for all the children in the family. Even the second cousin people and the kids I used to babysit.

I make Santa look like a lazy ba$tard! Why? I have no idea and I do it every single year.

  • So far I've made a quilt for my husband's grandma, my best friend and my sister in law.  I also made a "scrap sack" with a pin cushion attached for my sister that I'll put a couple of quilting goodies inside.  Oh!  And lunch bags for my nieces and nephew.

I was planning on making a sleeve for my husband's NookColor, but now he wants the Kindle Fire so I'm not sure if that'll happen.  I'm also planning on making reusable sandwich bags to go inside the lunch bags for the nieces and nephews.  I still need to finish the chef pants for my brother - I have one pair that needs hemming and another pair that needs to be started.  I was also thinking of making reusable coffee cup sleeves for my coworkers and giving them each a $5 gift card to Peets or Starbucks, but I don't know if I'll have time for that.  It all depends on how much time I have and how easy they are to make - I work with 23 people so maybe not.

    I think that's it.

  • Oh dear, what am I NOT making this year?  I'm making:

    • Felted slippers for girlfriends (knit)
    • Gloves for Dad (knit)
    • Ornaments (knit) to attached to baked goods for family
    • Sweater for DH (the man is 6'4".  I must be insane.  At least I'm already up to the armpit).
    • Throw blanket for Mom (this was probably my most insane request, but I'll do it because I love her).
    • I'm also going to try my hand at etching things onto wine glasses, casserole dishes and the like--obviously not knit, but still crafty.

  • I'm making a tutu tote bag for a niece, a hairbow holder for another niece and some hand warmer for another niece.

I'm making vanilla extract for the families

  • We don't exchange with the adults in our family and the kids do a name exchange so really we don't buy for them (the kids pick out the gifts for each other).  But we are making a few gifts for our own kids.

I'm working on a few blankets and quilts.  I'm also making some clothes and blankets for my oldest's American Girl doll.  My DH is getting involved in the craftiness too and is making doll beds and highchairs for my oldest girls (their birthdays are in December so they're technically birthday gifts).

I don't have plans for anything else simply because I don't have time.  It's been a really busy year.  I'm hoping to make more things next year (though I say that every year).

  • I love making Christmas gifts!  I always make my cousin's 3 kids something, but it gets more difficult as they get older :-(  I also typically make something for my sister and SIL.  My aunt always gives the women in the family a little gift...just something small, so I often make something for that, coffee sleeves, glasses cases, mittens, tote bags.  I have no idea what I'm making this year yet!  I'm in the middle of a knit baby blanket for a co-worker who is leaving before Christmas, so I'm trying to get that finished before I start anything else.

  • We are no longer exchanging gifts between IL siblings (thank goodness!) so I am only making a Kindle cover for MIL and purchasing something for FIL.

I agree on it being a time suck, but for my family making gifts will save us money, so I am making all of the women totes bags/purses and all of the men hot/cold packs.  The two kids will get legos.  Making them all the same thing, but different fabrics, will save me time, too.

  • I have a few things in the works..

I'm making two quilted table runners for my step-mom and mom.  I'm also making two christmas tree pillows for my family gift exchanges.  After that, there's nothing else I've started or committed to so I may leave it there.  Or I may get some more great ideas...

  • I'm so impressed with all the projects!  I got a sewing machine on Friday for my birthday, so now I'm trying to learn how to use it.  I've never so much as put on a button before, so this should be interesting...

I'm a great knitter, though.  Maybe those skills will somehow transfer?

  • Yes I am making a few gifts.

    I made these http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/photo_tiles/

for DH and a friend and will make another set for my aunt. They are super easy. I need to take a pic and do an AW post.
