Christmas tree and a toddler

I am thinking of buying a gate to go around the tree so Kyle does not pull ornaments off or hurt himself but my dh co-workers said that they just put their tree up and watched there LO to make sure they did not go near it.

What did you do?

Re: Christmas tree and a toddler

  • We just put it up, made sure there was nothing breakable near the bottom and would tell him "no" and move him away from the tree any time he got near it.    He did pretty good staying away from the tree.

  • We just put it up and kept the plastic ornaments at the bottom.  There was a little playing but we intervened when necessary.
  • Last year we didn't put all our glass ornaments on the tree, we only put breakables up high and not as many as usual.  Instead, we bought several big packages of the shatterproof balls.   I think we will probably do the same thing again this year.  While he knows what "don't touch" means, he's almost two which means he's going to touch it anyway, I don't feel the need to test him repeatedly.  Big Smile
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • We just made sure to not put any breakable ornaments near the bottom and just watched him.  I think eventually after he had fully inspected it, he wasn't that interested anymore.

Ditto. And there are things I want him to get to explore, so we put plastic and cloth oranments on the bottom 3rd. We also put bells where he could reach them and that was a big hit. Then we gave him his own set of bells (that he couldn't get in his mouth) to ring and that entertained him more than the tree.

  • We just kept our eye on him.  Our tree isn't in our main living space though so it wasn't much of an issue.
  • The last few years our tree hasn't been in the main living area, so we just locked the gate and kept them out.  This year I want to enjoy the tree, so we are putting it in the living area and will just deal with the touching and put the glass stuff up high and shatterproof down low.

  • I was just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best LOL

I was going to make sure that non breakables were on the bottom.  If the tree can survive R is can survive C.

  • I just bought a smaller tree this year.   I won't be able to keep her out of it, so I won't even try.  I bought a 4 foot tree and will put it on a table.  Not the same, but it will work for this year.  Next year I'll bring back out the larger tree.  I'm hoping the words "No, don't touch" will have more impact next year than the laughter I get right now.

  • We just put it up and watched him.  A couple of things got broken, but he didn't get hurt.  Now, with two crazy golden retrievers, we have to put our tree upstairs and not let them up there by themselves!
  • Just put the tree up with non breakable ornaments. So we ended up getting a lot of new ones. We put some of the little bells on it. That's what DS zero's in on and kept stealing off. I liked to jingle them.
