Hello ladies! I hardly ever post here but I have some cloth diapering questions and perhaps y'all can help me.
I am due April 6 and want to cd. I have researched Online and I was wondering if there are any local resources- such as diapering demos or the best places to purchase that y'all can recommend to me.
A couple friends have also recommended using a diaper service at first. What are the costs for that like around here?
Any other tips and tricks that you'd like to share are very welcome.
I am in the Spring/Woodlands area.
Thanks!
Re: Cloth Diapering Moms?
Congratulations!
As far as I know there are only two places that carry them locally. Your best bet for checking out a lot in person is Nurtured Family, up on 290. I haven't been, but I think they have the best selection. The other is Young and Restless inside the loop, but they are a resale shop and carry some used and new made by local companies (I think; I haven't been since they changed owners).
Diaper services (if there's one in your area--I know there's Dandy Diaper Service in the Heights) are really only good if you're going to be using cotton prefolds exclusively. If you want to venture into the more fancy diapers you won't be able to use a service.
We used CDs for our first (a very mixed assortment of types), and will for our next due in May. Washing them really wasn't that bad, even in the early days when you're going through a lot of diapers. We're looking forward to the cost savings of getting a second child's use out of them! I used All Free & Clear for most of the time, but then switched to Mountain Green when I found a bunch on clearance at Kroger.
Thanks so much! I will definitely check out Nurtured Family!
I really appreciate the encouragement as well I've been encountering a lot of screwed up faces when I say I want to cloth diaper.
We did it/are doing it with our kids. We do prefolds and covers at home, bum genius at daycare, and some fuzzi bunz and other odds and ends at different times.
Nurtured Family is great. There's also a lady in Cypress near Willowbrook who will "demo" different diapers for you: http://www.piddly-winks.com/Piddly-Winks.html (tell her Jena sent you). I'm pretty sure she has more diapers than she shows on her site, I know she sells wetbags but I don't see them online.
We cloth diaper and do all the laundry ourselves. Really, it's not a big deal. I considered a diaper service but you will 1) be limited to prefolds with a service and 2) will not be able to use prefolds in most daycares if you are going to work.
Nurtured Family is a nice store. They have a good selection (including one of my favorites, Blueberries!). There's also Children's Carousel in Katy who has some new and a ton of consignment diapers. I bought some of my first pockets from them.
We mostly use pocket diapers because of ease of use and daycare, but I also use fitteds and all-in-twos a lot at home. I have recently dweveloped a fitted addiction. However, for the newborn phase you can't beat prefolds and fitteds! I liked Kissaluv 0s for the newborn phase -- bonus, they are based in town and Children's Carousel often gets their sample diapers as the owner of Kissaluvs lives in Katy!
You might look into a diaper trial to try out a variety of types of diapers, it will let you see what works best for your family and try several brands. Jillian's Drawers has one that is supposed to be good.
Also, don't put all your cloth diapering eggs in one basket,. Don't just buy up one brand thinking it will be the one; chances are it won't! My favorites are not what I thought they'd be (outside of knowing pockets were right for us.)
Also, visit the Cloth Diapering board on the Bump. Everyone is very helpful. Also fan a lot of cloth diapering stores/manufacturers on Facebook, so you hear about the sales.
I'm glad to supply my stash to let people touch and feel too.
Thanks so much for all of the info and recommendations!
I looked at Jillian's Drawers and thought it sounded like a really good option to test out the diapers. Maybe I will go that route.
I will also check out Nurtured Family. I am not in Katy often but I will try to get to Children's Carousel.
Thanks again for the suggestions and tips. I really appreciate it!
