Hard transition: AI to cruise?

We have been on two all-inclusive vacations- food, alcohol, tips, etc.  We are thinking of taking a cruise- is this is a hard switch to make considering all of this is no longer included, although you gain more scenery and culture in the ports?

Re: Hard transition: AI to cruise?

  • For my DH, it was a hard transistion. He thought the food was better at the AI. He also liked the free flowing drinks. It was not nearly as hard for me. I figured that overall the cruise was cheaper but if you enjoy the drinks + tips it ends up being about the same price as an AI. This does depend on the AI you go to and what cruise you take. To me, I love them both as a vacation. Maybe to make it easier, get a balcony room. To me, they are so worth it if you can afford it. I think we made a mistake the first time that we went on a cruise because we got an inside room & because of that my DH definitely wanted to go to an AI. But then we tried a balcony room & DH really enjoyed it. Good luck!
  • Unfortunately the cruise we would be taking would be way more expensive than either of the AI's we have been to. :(  Like $2000+ more for an inside cabin....  we are trying to get around to see certain cities in Europe.

Thanks belle785- good points for sure!

  • that really all depends on how much you drink and what the initial costs are. you can do cruises really pretty inexpensively. if you have a budget stick to it.

as for more culture-eh-that all depends on wht you did (or didn't do) while you stayed at the AIs. if you jsut sat around the pool and never left then certainly you'll get a ton more-unless of course you spend your time hanging out at a mcdonalds or something :)

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I found it pretty easy to transition to.  In fact, I think the cruise was even more relaxing.  But I'm not a big drinker...  You can still buy AI drink packages on a lot of cruises, if that's important to you.
  • We found it to be a hard transition but we weren't taking a European cruise..we just did a 3 day Carribean. The food was ok while at our AI that we go to (Couples Jamaica resorts) the food is fantastic, we couldn't even enjoy wine with our dinner without worrying about the cost. In the end it ended up being about the same price for us as the AI, maybe a little cheaper if you include airfare. We probably won't do a cruise again, if we do it'll be a long time from now.
  • I have to chime that DH and I had the same worry- we brought loads of Rum Runners with us (plastic flasks, undetectable by scanners). So we had plenty of booze, although we did have a glass or two of wine with dinner. We booked through Costco so we had enough ship board credit ($100) to defray the cost of alcohol. The food on our RCCL cruise was better than our AI (Aventura Spa Palace)
