What would you do?

I coordinated a fundraiser for Tman's school.  I placed our order with the fundraiser product provider.  Sometime between when I did that, and today when they were supposed to be picked up, I changed a 1 to a 7 on my excel list of items ordered.  So, this morning, I was comparing the excel list that I have with the invoice the place sent me and I realized that mine had 6 more than the invoice.  I freaked out and scrambled and called them and got them to add the 6 to the order.  The school wrote a check for the 6.  As it turns out, 1 was the proper number, not 7, so now we have 6 extra.  The cost to the school was $98.10, the amount paid by the folks ordering was $180.  Most likely when I tell the administrator what happened, she is just going to either say I can keep them or will maybe look for someone else that wants them.  I do not think she will expect me to pay anything.  Since this was my (honest) mistake, however, I was thinking of maybe asking if anyone else that participated in the fundraiser would like to buy them for the $30/each.  If that doesn't happen, which I don't think it would, I will pay for them.

Would you pay the $98.10 just to cover the school's cost, or would you pay the $180?

Re: What would you do?

  • Okay, sorry, I didn't vote above, but what I'd do would be offer (at a minimum) to pay the $98.10 to cover the cost, because you don't want the school to lose money on it.  Then I'd try to sell it and anything you could sell for $30, give that money to the school.  That way if you sell three, the school gets the profits and you don't get hosed on what you give away.  The school wouldn't have MADE any more money off this since they weren't actually sold, so if you can generate even half of them at full price that's still more $$$ for the school.  You don't have to pay for the full amount (unless you really want to and have the money), but you could offer to cover the cost to the school so they don't come out behind.  Does that make sense?

ETA:  Sorry, not sure I explained myself well.  I'd pay the $98.10 to cover the cost; then I'd try to sell them and for any that you were able to sell, take back the part that covers your cost and give the rest to the school.  So, if you sell 3, you'd give the school 3 x $30, and then pay 3 x cost for the rest (so $49.05).  Does that make sense?  Sorry, long day.
  • Before I answer, what did you order too many of? Is it something cool or something that you wouldn't mind keeping if it couldn't be sold?

It's Christmas greenery.  It's cool, but seasonal and temporary.  I have no use for it.  I'd probably see if my mom wants it for something.  As for selling it, I would offer it to the families in the school like, "If anyone would like more greenery, I have extra of this item."

  • I would want the school to not be out so I would pay the $98 and then try to sell the greenery so it did not go to waste. If I sold it I would give the money to the school.

  • why isn't "pay the 98.10 and try to sell them for 30 and give the school any money earned" an option?  because that seems like the most fair thing and you suggested it in your post :)
