My baby needs a helmet

She gets it next week.  She doesn't have a flat spot, but because she was so squished in utero, her facial features are asymetrical.  I know there are worse things, so this isn't woe-is-me, but I'm still sad she needs to wear it for 2 months.

Anyone else's kid need/have one?  I'm curious about how it could affect sleep and how you keep the strap dry - she is a drooling machine and her 2nd chin rests on her chest so there isn't any airflow to dry it out.

Re: My baby needs a helmet

  • My niece needed one-she's a twin and I guess Reese was hogging all the womb and poor little Morgan ended up with a squished head. My brother and SIL wouldn't have fixed it (I guess they had the option to do nothing) but the girls are identical and they didn't want to deal with 16 year old Morgan complaining that they didn't even fix her head when she was a baby. I can pass along any questions you might have to my SIL if you'd like.

P.S. I just looked at a pic and I'm not sure if hers had a strap?

  • Aw sorry to hear, Jen but the good thing is that it's for just 2 months, right?

I really don't have too many ideas but what about a slip on chin cover type thing for her strap? I'm thinking something in my head like this: http://www.etsy.com/search/handmade?search_submit=&q=camera+strap+cover&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US

Those are obviously camera strap covers but I'm wondering if something like that would work. I'm not sure what the setup of her helmet strap would be. It may need to be something you DIY where the inside is a waterproof fabric and the outside where her skin would be would be a terry cloth or another absorbent fabric. Since she is a drooly monster, you could swap out the straps during the day. I'm not sure if something like this work work though. If you want to try something like this out, I can have my mom sew you up one to try out.

This is something that she will have to get fitted for and molded to her head, correct? Maybe you can ask about this when she gets fitted. I'm sure they will probably have something or ideas. Good luck, Jen!

  • Aww, poor baby C. No advice, but better to deal with this kind of thing when she's so little, as far as I'm concerned.
  • Adding no advice but sending good thoughts. I'm sure it's upsetting but she sounds like a lucky little lady to have you guys taking care of her.

  • Jen I'm so sorry.  I hope it does what it's supposed to do quickly.  Baby C is awesome enough to handle the extra accessory!
  • good luck!  i think what h-dubs posted could work well as a drool catcher.  and definitely ask the ped, i am sure they deal with the question all of the time because they typically helmet little kids and not when they are older.

  • Aww, sorry, I don't have advice either.  The 2 months will go by so quickly, and she'll be great.
  • We were borderline to get a helmet due to a flat head, but we decided against it (we were dealing with Oliver's hearing issues and we thought he was going to need hearing aids...doctors advised us not to do the helmet since he was already going through so much).

Now that he's 18 mo., I kind of wish we would have just done the helmet. Those 2 months would have flown by. The one side of his head is still flatter than the other. The doctor said it's not a big deal and it might keep rounding out, but I can still tell. CHOP told us they're putting helmets on more and more kids now, it's becoming much more common.

So, I have no advice....I'm sorry you have to deal with it. The 2 months will FLY by!

  • I have no advice either but good luck.  I'm sure she'll do fine and will have the helmet off in no time!

  • A friend of a friend's child had/has it - I think he is done but I am not sure.  I also believe he had to have it for longer than 2 months.  I don't know all the details but I can find ask her

I am so sorry you have to go through this!
