POLL: Irrational Fears

What are yours? Not the things that could potentially happen, like a plane crash... but the things that are just so far out there that it seems crazy to even worry about.

Re: POLL: Irrational Fears

  • Stopping at a red light under a freeway overpass. I always think about trucks flipping over the side or the whole thing collapsing on my car. I'm sure the amount of times this has actually happened is next to none.

I think about this too. Or like when I am stopped under train tracks.  I always fear it will crash down on me.

My biggest irrational fear, and this has gotten better over the years, but I am afraid of squirrels.  Now, here in TN we have little squirrels and they tend to be cuter than the massive, ugly, orange ones up in Illinois.  Either way, between the ages of  10 and 25 this was a huge fear of mine. I would walk the long way to avoid passing a squirrel.

  • Animal attacks.  Bears in the woods, sharks in the ocean, skunks under my porch, even my own horses in the barn, etc.  None of it stops me from doing anything, but I'm always on the lookout for a swooping bat or a runaway bull.

  • When I'm in a tunnel underwater I have a fear that the tiles will start popping off and water will start pouring in.

  • Bridges over water. Whether I'm driving, walking or no matter how much water is actually under the bridge, I am still white knuckle terrified of falling.

I'm also petrified of cities. Just seeing the Boston skyline makes my palms sweat. H wanted me to go to NYC with him last weekend and I had to pass because I was afraid my fear of cities would put me into early labor. Just the thought of ever going into a big city makes my heart race.

  • I have a fear anytime I am on a bridge that it is going to collapse in front of me or wherever I am at and my car is going to be submerged into the water and drowning. I am also scared of escalators. It freaks me out thinking that my clothing or something is going to get stuck in it and I am going to get hurt or something. I have a slight panic attack every time I go to the mall and have to ride on one. It is totally irrational, but if I can find an elevator I am going to take that instead.
  • The power going out while I am in the shower. In my head I think spiders and roaches will start coming out and crawling all over me. I know I am crazy. :)
  • Lots of 'em.  When we were little, my grandma told us stories about tragedies. We would actually ask her to tell us about the little boy who died in the fire, or the little boys who drowned in the lake.  I still have nightmares.

The bridge one is big for me, because my wonderful grandma told me the story of the bridge collapse (this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Bridge) while we were driving over the replacement bridge.  I still get nervous if I'm stuck on one in traffic.  I can't sit high up in stands because I'm afraid of the building collapsing. I'm afraid of heights, or more specifically, falling from them.  Although I did go skydiving, which didn't bother me.  Being on our roof, terrifying, jumping from a plane, not so much.  Oh, and houses exploding.  I was a kid when one blew up a few blocks away.

    I'll stop with those.

  • If my arms get pinned beneath the covers, I feel like I'm going to suffocate.  Head and nose are out and not obstructed, but I still feel like I can't breathe.

I am the exact opposite. Elevators scare the crap out of me and everyone thinks its funny and will jump to make it rock or laugh when I start to panic that the doors are taking too long to open back up. I'm not so scared of the elevator falling so much as I'm terrified of beng stuck inside.

I'm also totally afraid of missing a gas leak and our house exploding. I used to work for the gas company and there was an emergency and a bunch of our crew got sent out because an gas line exploded in a residential neighborhood.

I've got a bunch more, but I don't know if I should admit to them all! LOL

  • Bridges scare me too.  But I try convincing myself that they inspect them and there is no way that they would let people drive on them if they were unsafe.  Then the I-35 bridge collasped in Minneapolis.  I lived near there and crossed that bridge several times a day but I happened to be on vacation the day it collapsed.  I no longer trust bridges.

I am also afraid of bears attacking me while I'm sleeping in a tent.  But that never happens, why would bear do that unless if there was food or something in the tent to attract them?  Then it did happen in Yellowstone last year, campers were mauled in their tents while sleeping.  I still camp, but now I'm more scared than ever.

  • getting stuck in elevators. And people getting body parts stuck in the doors. Even if they are three feet apart i refuse to put my hand out if they have started closing. Several years ago there was a surgeon who walked headfirst into an elevator in the med center and was decapitated when the doors didnt reopen.

  • I'm afraid of being stuck on a highway overpass during an earthquake. I don't even think about it when traffic is moving, but if I'm stopped on an overpass I just keep thinking, "what if the big one were to hit right now?"

I stuck my foot in the elevator at the hospital a couple of weeks ago and DH freaked out. I always thought they would stop closing, but it didn't. Luckily, I had enough time to pull it out... but I won't be doing that again!

And... wow, that's super scary about the surgeon. Talk about a crazy way to die.

  • The underpass under the train tracks, bridge collapse, birds are going to attack me, the end of the world. I'm a freak.
