If you travel often to LI

My best friends father passed away and the services are tonight down on LI.  I have never traveled down there during rush hour.  I would go early and just hang out but dh does not get home till 4:30 and he is the one watching LB.

Is it going to be really bad going over the GWB into LI during rush hour or is most of it coming out of LI?  I kinda assume I am headed for a ridiculously long car ride in traffic.

Re: If you travel often to LI

  • It depend on where in LI you are going. If you are going to take the Grand Central Pkwy or the LIE there will be traffic once you hit those. I look at LI as one big highway-they all run into one another, if you can avoid the LIE that would be best (IMO) It can be hit or miss, so you may be fine. GL

Im so sorry for your friend. she is lucky to have you for support!

  • I am taking 95 to cross bronx expwy over the GWB then cross island expwy (which I am only on for 9 miles).  Not the way I normally go to his house, this is the way to the funeral home, so I have no clue.

    Thanks so much!

  • I'd be scared of the GWB/Cross Island at that time.

Can you take 84 to 684 and down south.

We made it to exit 42 on 495 in 1hr15 minutes on a Sunday... record timing.

From 684 you can take Hutch down and take either White Stone or Throggs Neck which is much cheaper too.  Just a thought.

The Hutch just starts to back up around that time.

The Throggs Neck Bridge is having work done on it until the 28th, and the traffic to get to it from the 95 or cross Bronx is a disaster!!!!!! It back up from Pelham Bay.

I live right by the Throggs Neck so I see the delays every night. Sometimes it takes me an hour or more to get home from Elmsford,

The Cross Bronx to the GWB is scary as well.

Hopefully leaving at the time you are leaving it wont be too bad, but I would still opt for the Whitestone, or Throggs Neck over the GWB.

    Hope that helps.

    Sorry for your loss

  • I would avoid GWB and Cross Bronx at that time at all costs. I would opt for the whitestone and pick up the cross island that way. Do you have a gps in your car or do you have to mapquest it before you leave home?

  • You can cross over the Tappan Zee on 87 to Bronx and go across the CrossCounty Parkway and hit Bronx River Pkwy down also to bridges.

Exaclty this. Also, the Sprain to the BRP will get you to the Whitestone/Throgsneck (you can hook up with the Cross County at Exit 11 (I think East) or further through the Bronx (no toll and possibly less traffic, but 87 is usually good there).  Def avoid the Cross Bronx/GWB
