Question for nurses/those in the know about health :)

I am on day 7 (the final day) of my antibiotic- Bactrum- for a sinus infection/double ear infection. Starting yesterday, my chest hurts and I'm coughing too. It sort of feels like I'm getting bronchitis. Oh, and my ears still hurt but most of my sinus related symptoms are gone. My mom said it's probably just the gunk draining but it doesn't feel that way to me. Since I'm already on antibiotics, is it even worth my time to go to the doctor? I'd hate to be sick(er) for TG and BF! :(

Re: Question for nurses/those in the know about health :)

  • I dont think it would hurt to go. Especially with thanksgiving Thursday. It could be the junk. Or the junk draining causing another ear infection. They could just put you on another antibiotic like amoxicillin or something else pregnancy safe. Hope that helps.

  • I would want to get checked out to make sure it isn't changing into something like pneumonia!

  • Thanks ladies. I was kinda thinking the same thing. The problem is that we don't have a family doctor yet/still so I'll have to go to Urgent Care or something. My OB is the one who diagnosed and prescribed meds last week... I don't know if he'll do it again! But, I do see him this afternoon so I'll probably see what he thinks before going to UC. As always, I appreciate your help. :)
  • Can't hurt to ask your OB but bronchitis is viral so antibiotics won't help it - it just has to run it's course.  My guess is inflammation from all the drainage and if it's making you short of breath, that can happen too. There is also something called "post-infectious cough" which is after you aren't technically "sick" anymore you still cough sometimes (esp. in the cold or with exertion).

    Hope you feel better!

Well, that's good to know as well. I am allergic to a ton of antibiotics so add that in with what's "safe" during pregnancy and you don't have much to choose from. Hopefully it's just that post-infectious cough thing. ;) Thanks!

  • This is the same stuff that DH, MIL, FIL, and I have now. It's rampant right now!

I don't know if you can take steroids while pregnant, but those helped me TONS. I just have 6 days worth and a zpack. Yesterday I started a second course of 10 days of a different antibiotic.

  • I'd definitely give your OB a call and see what he/she says.  When I was pregnant with Mads I was sick my entire second trimester with a cold that went to a sinus infection/ear infection, then bronchitis, and then another sinus infection.  It was miserable & finally took a zpack for them to clear everything up.  Definitely worth a call just to see what they say.  Hope you're feeling better soon!!
  • Zithromax is one of my allergies... go figure! I go in at 2:30 so I'll see what he says. Thanks all!
