So, a few months back, I received a letter from the government insurance people here in the NL. Basically, they said that the law has changed, and everyone needs to have Dutch insurance, regardless of whether you're already insured somewhere else. But, they have an organization that will look at your insurance (if you already have it) and will determine if that's good enough so you don't have to have Dutch insurance.
Oh, but while you wait for their decision, please pay 350 euros because you're currently uninsured (by their standards), and if the board decides that your insurance is good enough, you can have that money back. If the board decides your insurance is not good enough, sorry...no money back for you.
Ok, seriously?! I have insurance! I LIKE my insurance...my insurance already pays 100% of everything for me, much like Dutch insurance pays for Dutch people...except it's US. Why do I have to go through this crap! I'm so stinking frustrated, and I'm mad that I have to drop 350 euros to some agency when I already have insurance...I'm not uninsured! Seriously, they had better decide my insurance is just fine, or this rant is going to go into a full-fledged b!tch-fest!
Re: Frustrated and Annoyed.
Bureaucracy sucks. :-( I'm sorry you have to go through that.
Except that the Swiss government said I didn't need to pay for Swiss insurance until they made a decision on if my US insurance would be acceptable. They denied in March and said I need to be insured with a Swiss agency by April.
We ask for an offer from health insurance company. They took that as we are now insured and have a policy. We never tried to resolve that issue... I never did sign anything and we specifically wrote we want an offer. *sigh* anyways they immediately send hand written bills from the month I registered in Z?rich (sept) till April. Over a grand in back insurance that the government said we didn't need to pay.
It became such a dispute between the three of us that we ended up needing to contact a ombudsman to mediate between the Swiss Government and the health insurance company for us. We won and didn't have to pay the back insurance thankfully.

WTH? They should charge the 350 AFTER determining that your insurance isn't good enough. I'd be afraid that once I give over that money I'll never see it again.
Sorry you're dealing with this : (
