Does anyone check the board at night? I need your PCP recs.

And I need to go tomorrow.  I have been sick for 5 weeks straight and I can't take it anymore.  My PCP essentially told me to rest and push fluids (after 2 antibiotics and a round of steroids).  Which is all well and good, but I'm doing that.  I did nothing but sleep this weekend, and pee.  And I'm worse.

I need a new perspective.  Someone far west and that can get you in the same day.  I'm open to a whole office full of drs, as long as one of them can see me and I can get a little sympathy.

I know I sound whiny and I'm sure it's not the right approach, but I did call my dr today and she never called me back.  Who does that?  At least have a nurse call me.  This is not the first time it's happened.

Anyway, suggest away.

  • My husband sees Dr. Dave Stearnes. He is with Methodist Physicians. I think he is very happy with him. We trained with him & I always thought he was a great guy.

I will be totally honest with you - I cannot for the life of me imagine who will be able to take a new patient on the same day. We have longer slots (for instance mine are 3x as long) for new patients, so there are less of those slots in any given day. I think I see 3-4 news in a day; my wait time for a new pt is quite good compared to a lot of folks and it is usually 3-4 weeks. It would not be terribly unusual for a new pt to have to wait 3 months or more (not saying that's ok, it's long, but primary care is definitely underserved, even in a city this size).

It's hard to see a pt for the first time, when you have been sick x 5 wks, have taken 3 different treatments and you are feeling worse... this is not a quick 5 minute visit here.

Also it is the 2nd to last day of the week, before a holiday... I am afraid you will be in a tight spot. I'm sorry. I hope you have good luck & are on the mend asap. No one wants to be sick over the holidays. Sad

You are not getting my hopes up :(

I didn't consider that being a new patient would put me on wait status.  The last 3 weeks I've tried to get in to my own doctor (whom I've seen for 15 yrs) and I was told she's totally booked.  I get that, but what should I do at this point?  I tried again today, only to not have my phone calls returned.

    All I'm saying is waaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  • I'm sorry, this is such a tough situation. I hope you get something figured out asap.

The no phone call is no bueno either. To be fair I ask that people allow 24 hours (unless it's an emergency obviously) for a return call. Sometimes the folks who call in the afternoon get a call back the next morning.

It is always so hard the week of a holiday. Of course there are a zillion people in your exact same situation who are all demanding to be seen at once & there are only 2 days left in the week now... it is hard all the way around but you deserve to get a phone call back with a game plan at the least.

Your regular PCP could not fit you in within 3 wks? I wouldn't be happy about that either. :(

Sorry you are feeling so lousy.

  • If it were me, I would just call out to Alegent Health Clinic at Lakeside. Tell them you're open to getting in to the first available doc. I personally see Dr. Angela Law, but she doesn't work on Tuesdays. I've seen several other doctors in that office and they've all been great ---- Dr. Jennifer Liu and Dr. David Keller, for sure. Here is a link to the clinic website and you can see intro videos for any of the docs.

They open at 8am but you might be able to call 1-800-ALEGENT tonight and get scheduled for first thing tomorrow with one of them.

Thanks for the warm fuzzies and explaining everything.  I'm feeling ever so slightly better :)

I called this morning when they opened and left a message with the messaging service.  I was told I would get a call back by the end of the day. So that's all I had to go on.  And to be fair, each week I would call Monday or Tuesday of that week and they would say she was booked the entire week at that time. So I kind of figured it was pointless to book an appt a week or more out since I was trying to be optimistic and believe I would be over it by then.  Mea culpa for the most part.

Would you suggest I just hit up an emergiclinic type place at this point?  I'm not searching for antibiotics here, just mainly something to help me sleep and boy would I love to have someone drain my ears.  I'm sure that's not possible :(

I kind of thought perhaps that was the sitch. I can understand what you were thinking, though. Sometimes I tell people, just make the appointment, you can always call & cancel, but that way you're "on the books!" Holding your spot, so to speak! :)

I personally would not go to an urgent care, I... don't have anything polite to say here. I just wouldn't do it.

What I *would* do is call your PCP's office & politely but firmly ask to speak to a real live nurse immediately. Tell the nurse you need a prescription cough syrup like Guiatuss AC (sometimes being specific makes the nurse's job easier) ;) because you can't get any sleep. They should be willing to call that in for you.

There's no way to "drain your ears" unless you want to have tubes placed like a toddler. :) If they feel "full" or are popping, they probably do have fluid behind - try a decongestant such as Sudafed (the real deal, behind the counter stuff). Ears drain into the back of your nose so taking a decongestant opens that area up so they can drain. Also if you are not doing a sinus rinse START, they are awesome. Gross but so so so helpful.

That is a lot of internet advice, sorry. :) hope you are on the road to recovery by turkey time.

I feel like this may have sounded really rude & directed towards you - it is definitely not. This is a "if you don't have anything nice to say (about urgent care) don't say anything at all" kind of moment.

    I am an idiot. :)

You're obviously well versed in this area and your advice is totally wanted and appreciated.  I  didn't take it that way. Carry on.  :)

This morning my message was to please refill that awesome cough syrup I was given a few weeks ago. I'm out.  And to let me know if an allergist might be he right move at this point ( my doc thinks this is all allergy related).  I get the feeling she nor her nurses got my message.

I've been on constant sudafed for a few weeks (I'm sure I'm on the watch list at my pharm) and twice daily nasal rinses.  So so frustrated.

Well for heaven's sake how much easier could you make it for them?! I would be peeved about this too if I were you.

Obviously knowing nothing else about your situation I think possibly Allergy vs ENT wouldn't be a bad idea. Though to be honest your PCP should be able to treat your allergies at least initially, there are a million options.

LOL @ watch list. Sounds like you are doing everything you possibly can. Do you use a Flonase or Nasacort nasal spray or a Pulmicort solution in your sinus rinse? OTC antihistamine like Claritin/Zyrtec/Benedryl etc?

  • Dr. B, you are awesome. I always appreciate your perspective on the inner workings as seen by a physician :)I think between the nurses on here & you we could start our own clinic. NebraskaBride06 could design our website and we could bring Tiff out of retirement to transport patients?!

Teresa, I hope you feel better!!

  • What about seeing a different dr. in the same office?   Maybe then you could get in sooner?

  • I see Dr. Keasling at Lakeside - I started out as a new patient about 6 months ago and I could swear I got in within a few days, a week TOPS.. but I dont even think it was that long.  I really like her a lot - 758-5400

  • Thanks all!

Another call to my doctor today and I found out she's out of town this week.  Too bad they didn't tell me that yesterday.  I have seen another dr in this office for this sickness but I didn't like him.  Beggars can't be choosers today, so now I'm awaiting a call from him.

If I survive this ordeal (I'm pretty dramatic about it at this point) I do think I'll look into a new PCP.  I'm just not happy with how this office is run.  Is it normal for a dr to have a dedicated nurse, or does it just depend the office? Both my OB and pediatrician have dedicated nurses that I love. So I feel secure talking with them.  This is not the case with my current dr. I've kept notes and I've talked to 5 different nurses during this ordeal.   And now I'm just rambling.

    Again, thanks!

SB - I am on Zyrtec daily and a script nasal spray.  For years.  Ugh.
