Re: Poll: Christmas Spending

  • Kyle has so many toys that we currently have no place to put them. We are going to just buy him a few thingsto give him something to open. He is also so young that a lot of the holiday is lost on him right now.

  • two things from us and santa stuff... that's it! (technically, one gift from us, one from brother/sister). DS is 4 1/2 and is soooo not into asking for a ton of stuff.... but we're getting him a leap pad which is 100 by itself.

  • We're budgeting half what we normally do for each child because we're going to Disney.  The older girls have the option of having their gift in the form of their own spending money for the trip.  Tori is getting one large gift from Santa and a couple of small gifts from us.

  • DS has SO many toys - we rarely buy anything new for him during the year.  DH has such a big family that DS gets TONS of stuff for his birthday, so he really has no need for other stuff during the year.  For Xmas, we usually plan one big thing (last year, it was a bouncer playhouse thing), and get a few little things - that usually adds up to a few hundred bucks. I do get him winter clothes at the end of summer, though.  He does get tons of summer clothes at his bday (March), but in the winter, we are always scrambling to find LS stuff and pants.  I probably need to get him some more winter clothes for Xmas, too.

  • Every time I turned around, I'm picking up something else for ds...   So my spending keeps increasing.   As of yesterday, I am technically done with his Christmas shopping, unfortunately, that means I have a month of seeing things in the store and possibly picking up more stuff.   Embarrassed

I bought him the Leap Pad when it first came out (actually pre-ordered it) and he's been playing that for months but with only 2 additional games.  So I picked up quite a few games for that, a scooter, some puzzles, the wack-a-mole game, a kid's digital camera, the Lion King BluRay/DVD set (on sale at Target right now), view-finder discs for his view-finder, and I think that is all I have bought.  I need to pull it out of my closet and make inventory of it and start wrapping!

He will also be getting a Bop-It but my mom wound up picking one up before I did so I have to get it from her since that is the ONLY thing DS has asked for and has been asking for since July.  So that will be at least one of his Santa gifts.

  • Each boy really only has two items they really want.  It should be pretty easy to make them happy for pretty cheap.

  • I really try to keep it under $200 for Charlotte.  She's our only so it's "easier" in that respect in that I don't have to split the spending.  Also, I really, really don't like to give her a lot of toys.  We're not home all that much and when we are, there are just certain things that she likes to do/play (dress-up, artwork, etc), so we try to stick to that.  I HATE clutter and lots of toys ~ especially the little stuff ~ so the best way to keep it under control is to just not buy it :)

She asked for two things for Christmas ~ a power wheels car and some My Little Ponies.  She even said "I don't need any more toys, Mom".  I found a Barbie PW Jeep on Craigslist for $40, then I'll buy a new battery and the charger.  I went Christmas shopping yesterday and got her a set of 6 My Little Ponies, MLP Princess Celestia (she asked for very specific ponies), the Lion King DVD (which I got for $12.99 at Target!!!!), a CD of Disney princess songs for the car, a MLP DVD (got for free with the MLP dolls), a Disney princess bedtime story collection, and a few things for her stocking (princess electric toothbrush, decorate-your-own toothpaste, a bath puff, some Bath and Body Works hand lotion and hand sanitizer that matches her hand soap in her bathroom....).  I want to get her the Crayola dry erase activity center, but not sure whether I'll wait for her birthday or give it to her for Christmas.

Her birthday is at the end of February so we try to keep it small for both and divide her gifts b/t the two occasions.

  • I clicked less than $100, but if you add in birthday then between $100 and $200.

Once he's older it will matter more, but he's too young to realize that there is a difference in his b-day and Christmas.  I think.  And like Charlotte, he's cheap to please!  I only spent as much as I did because I wanted to get him a picnic table.  Everything else is pretty small.

  • The older they get, the more expensive they get (but at least you don't have to pay for daycare). We hadn't planned on it but ended up having to get her a new trampoline since her's broke and she uses it daily for practicing her tumbling skills.  I bought her a coach shoulder bag thing at the outlet and then got her some PA (cheer company) boots, sephora makeup, a desk lamp and then a couple of clothing items. Good thing she is an only child.

OH: And her stocking is a few perfume rollerballs, nail polish and a mini flashlight.

  • I said $100-200 simply because we are thinking about getting him a play kitchen (from Santa) and then some "my first tools" kind of toys since he keeps trying to grab our power tools in the garage. Also DH and I have a few projects we plan on doing in the first of the year, and it would be nice if Evan had his own tools he is allowed to touch.

We also get him lots of books. He loves them and I don't mind getting him more. I just need to build another bookshelf for them.

I appreciate all of the things our families buy for him, but they usually aren't very practical and usually take up a lot of room. Or my SIL buys him random clothes that aren't his size and a few of them have actually been girls clothes that she says she thinks he can wear anyway.

  • Well, we have both Christmas and Hanukkah, so between the two, it gets way expensive. We try to keep Christmas to 4 or 5 mid-range gifts, with one big gift. Then for Hanukkah we do small little gifts (yo-yo, small book, play jewelry, etc.) for each of he first 7 nights, then do a big gift on the 8th night. But even the small gifts really add up, especially for 2 kids.

We celebrate both too, but Evan is still too young to understand that there are presents for each night and we won't see DH's family until after Christmas because of work schedules. How old were your kids when you started doing gifts for Hanukkah?

  • Our trip to NYC is pretty much our big gift to each other, and K. Plus the outings like the broadway show and visit to the American Girls store are also going to be gifts in and of themselves.

  • We are only spending 100 on Audric. The grandparents, aunts and uncles give him plenty. But he's getting fun things.

Every year he gets a personalized ornament too! (He can choose to take all 18 when he turns 18, or keep them with his mama)
