Following up again

1st interview was on Oct 24th. 2nd interview on Nov 2nd. 2nd interviewer told me I would hear from them either way within 10 days. I did not get any response so I followed up after 14 days and they responded they will have a decision soon. It has been another week and still no word.

Background- this is a new business opening up. I am applying for a sales/management position. I am assuming they are nailing down the job description, salary, ect. I know they have not called any of my references and I don't think the 2nd interview went very well. I would really like this job. It is more interesting/exciting than any other jobs I have applied for.

If I don't get this job I will be giving up my full time job search and getting two part time jobs. Should I email again and say I have been offered another job and I will need to respond to this job soon? I actually could wait a few more weeks for a response but I think they should be at least updating me at this point. I have a feeling that I am not their top or even in the top few candidates.

Thoughts?

Re: Following up again

  • I would contact them again.  You are right--they should be updating you more.  Good luck!
  • You have no idea where they stand and they're starting up a company. I'd cut them some slack.

Do you indeed have another job lined up?

Plus you're going into a holiday week. Key people may not even be in the office. Follow up next Tuesday.

  • I agree that you need to cut them some slack while they get things up and running, but a short call or email confirming you are still interested and to please contact you if they need additional info or materials is fine.  I would be sure to continue to express interest in a tactful rather than demanding way.

And I would not claim to have another offer unless I actually have another comparable offer I would consider taking instead.

FWIW my current job told me they would contact me re. second interview within a week, I didn't hear until six weeks later and thought for sure they had overlooked me.  Turns out they were just busy.

  • I agree with PP - definitely give them some time over the holiday weekend.  Starting up a new business comes with tons of unexpected delays.  I would suggest sending a quick email today or tomorrow to let them know that you are definitely still interested, thank them again for their time and wish them a happy holiday.  With my current position, the owner was in the process of purchasing a second business and trying to hire multiple positions for both places - it took about 3 weeks for them to finally make me an offer, but they knew the entire time that I was very interested and willing to wait and actually created a position for me because of it.

Claiming to have another offer could backfire if they feel you are putting pressure on them to make a decision when they haven't had a chance to yet.  They may tell you to go ahead and accept it.
