RF vs FF carseat

How do you currently have your carseat? Evan is still RF. but when Madison arrives we will have to turn him around, at least in my car as 2 RF carseats will not let DH fit in my car. But he will still fit RF in dh's car. Do you think it will confuse him having one each way?

Just curious what you ladies have done.

Re: RF vs FF carseat

  • We turned Alex around at 12months. I don't think it will confuse him too much because "the baby" will be RF while, the "big boy" will be FF. At least that's my hope for us.

    RF until 2.

    Same.

  • We turned Noah FF when he turned a year because he was way past 20 lbs. Peyton is still RF because shes so tiny and only weighs 18 lbs.

I don't think it will confuse him. My kids like it because they can actually see each other better so they are always laughing and giggling together in the car.

  • We turned Z FF at one year. We had our reasons.

I don't think he will be confused. We (if we had 2 or more) would have the same problem with DH's truck, there is only room for one RF carseat.

  • Molly is still under a year but we will RF as long as her height allows. But if you have to turn him I don't think he will be confused. Kids are more flexible than we give them credit for.
  • I *think* what you're asking is not if he'll be confused about why he and the baby are different but why is he one way in one car and one way in the other?

We are RF until 2 but I have thought about this (we had to reinstall a seat recently and DH wanted to just put it in FF since it was out anyway).  I think it depends on the kid.  I know my kid and she will LOVE being FF so if she was that way in one car and not the other, I think she'd fight getting into her seat even more.

So, net-net, I think it depends on age and car seat tolerance.

  • Neena is still RF and will remain that way at least until two if not longer. This is meant not to be snarky, but I just can't justify turning her FF knowing that it's significantly safer to have her RF.

With that being said, we only have one child, so we don't have to worry about the driver seat being cramped just yet. :-) We have tiny cars so I totally understand.

ETA: To answer your question (sorry I didn't do that originally). Knowing my child, she would be sensitive to one being RF and one being FF. I know that she'll like FF, so I have a feeling she would protest sitting in a RF seat after we turn her FF. But, that is Neena, so Evan might be totally different. :-)

  • Thanks. Our original plan was RF until 2. But now that my car won't allow for room for 2 RF thats what our dilemma is. Sorry I wasnt clear about the confusion question  I meant do you think he would be confused RF in dh's car but FF in my car?

For what it's worth I know I most likely won't be driving around as much once Madison is born due to the cold weather and not wanting to take her out. So we may be using Dh's car more during my maternity leave.

Oh the decisions. Maye for the time being we will leave both RF. and when DH is along just take his car as I can fit just fine in mine with both carseats. Thanks for your responses :-)

That's what I was going to suggest/ ask about.  I won't turn Natalie around at least until she's two, probably longer.  We have larger vehicles so it's not an issue, but RF is really important to me.

  • In the van we have Abby FFing now (turned her at 21 months when the twins were born) and the twins are RFing.  The twins will remain RFing until at least 2 yrs old.  Plus I really like the setup because the twins can look right at Abby and she entertains them!

In MIL and DHs cars we have two RFing carseats.  This way if they take the twins they will sit RFing and then Abby just sits RFing if she is alone in the car.

This was pretty much what I was going to say for Collin. I think once he gets a taste of FF that is going to be the end of RF. That being said, you have to be safe in the front seat too. So if you have to turn him, turn him in the one and see how he does. He might surprise you!
