BBE and other cooks

I'm planning Baby Malibu's 1st birthday party. (sniff, sniff) She'll be a year old on the 5th. We're having a family party of about 25 people on December 10th.

I'm having trouble finding recipes or ideas for party food (we'll do a full dinner) that isn't sloppy joes, pizza, or chili. Our budget isn't too high, we just had a car repair that kind of put a dent in it, so curious if anyone has a budget-friendly go-to recipe to make for a crowd. If I have to do the sloppy joes, I can, but I guess I wanted to do something a little fancier than that.

The only given for the party is that much wine will be consumed. Lots and lots of wine. It'll be a bittersweet day watching my baby enter toddlerhood.

Oh, FFS.

Re: BBE and other cooks

  • Lasagne?  You can make different kinds - traditional, veggie, Mexican.
    This is my siggy.
  • Hmm. That sounds yummy. I haven't made lasagna in a long time.
    Oh, FFS.
  • Make your own taco bar.

Slow cooker roast pork or beef sandwiches.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!

Ooh, I like both of these ideas. Tacos would be easy to throw together since people pick their own toppings. Maybe I'll go with tacos.

Great. Now I'm craving Taco Bell.

  • I think the lasagna is a great idea!

For my friends' daughter's 1st birthday they did a present time capsule for her and had people write letters and give gifts to save for her 21st birthday.  It was pretty cool.

  • We did a nacho/baked potato bar for DS's birthday. The potatoes were a nightmare, but everyone liked the nachos!

  • We're doing a chili bar (a meat-only chili, a beans-only chili and maybe a white chili, so people can mix & match, plus cornbread and toppings), with queso dip, salsa, guac and cut up veggies as apps.

I find it a lot easier to come up with a theme and then go from there.  Italian is easy and relatively cheap.  Lasagna was discussed, but baked ziti, manicotti or even a 'pick your toppings' pasta bar would work with meatballs, sausage, mushrooms, a few different kinds of sauce, etc.  Apps could be bread with herbed oil, caprese skewers and baked breaded ravioli.

Indian is another route that would be super cost-effective, as is a lot of other Asian fare if you DIY it... ordering Chinese can be expensive, but chicken and broccoli with steamed rice is easy to make and relatively cheap.

  • I was going to say lasagna too!

I made chicken tacos for my family reunion, the easiest way to make tacos for a crowd is in crock pots (slow cooker)

Put chicken, water and seasoning in the crock pot and have it cook all day. Yummy pull apart chicken! AND SOOOO EASY!

You can do pulled pork as well, or just regular ground beef.

  • Serve Italian.

Pasta and meatballs and sausage is liked by everyone.:)
  • We did a taco/nacho bar at our Halloween Party and it was a hit. :)
