Audrey update

Since I asked for advice earlier, I thought I'd post an update, for those who may be interested...

We took Audrey to the doctors tonight. She has reflux:( Poor thing. We have medicine for her now, but the doctor said it takes 3-5 days to start working. If you have any t&p's for her to feel better and for my sanity, that would be great:)

Re: Audrey update

  • I am so glad you looked into this and that you have a plan.  Reflux is another challenge and can make things feel 10x harder than it already is with a newborn so I am so glad she is getting started on medicine and that you guys caught it early.

I have learned that it is so important to be your child's advocate(like you did today by calling the doctors and being so on top of it) because a lot of times these kinds of things get dismissed when you know you have a feeling something isn't right.  You should feel really great about that!

Parker got started on his reflux meds(he took Prevacid) when he was 5 weeks old and once we got his dosage figured out(it took a few weeks to get him to the right amount for his dosage) it really made such a big difference.   So if you are not seeing a difference after a week or so definitely be persistant about it because she may need a higher dose.

I am not sure about Audrey but Parker never let us put him down because even though he was on meds the reflux still bothered him for quite some time.  The RnP sleeper saved us in that regard for sleeping because he wasn't on his back entirely that way.  He was most comfortable being held so wearing him in a wrap or sling helped a ton and let me have my hands free sometimes.  I am sure you know about these thing already but thought I would mention them.  After nusing we would hold him upright for 30 minutes or so and that also make a huge difference in his comfort level and to help with not spitting up as much.

I hope she is feeling better soon, seeing them so uncomfortable is so so hard.  :(  You will be in my thoughts, I am sure you are just exhausted and just know it will get better! xo

Pretty much everything in this, especially the bolded. Phoenix was on something similar to Zantac, and it made almost no difference. So we had to try something even stronger, and after a week of that it literally was night and day difference, and it just made me wish we were able to get her diagnosed sooner.

I'm glad you were able to get Audrey some medicine so quickly, and I hope it starts working soon!

  • Thanks Genevieve! I honestly feel bad that I didn't call a few days ago, but I thought it was just a phase at first:(

I have been keeping her upright for 30 min after eating. The poor thing is afraid to eat I think, which is why she's been so fussy latching on. She has gained weight though, so the doctor isn't worried about it. I've also been giving her BM from a bottle when she's super fussy because she seems to take that a little easier. The Dr. also suggested adding some rice cereal to her bottles which we tried tonight. I actually had to snip a larger hole in the nipple cause the cereal made it nearly impossible for her to suck the milk out. I guess I'll keep trying that to see if it helps her be more comfortable.

I think we're going to try letting her sleep in her bouncer tonight to see if that helps keep her down longer.

I'll keep an eye on her dosage, thanks for the tip! We also have a follow up appointment next week to see how she's improved.

I honestly feel like taking care of her would be a breeze if it weren't for the reflux. I just feel terrible for her. I'm typically alone with her for about 11 hours a day which makes it really rough too. Today, I swear I held her the entire time aside from a short nap she took. I'm just so burnt out by the time Josh comes home! Ahhhhh. I hope it gets better soon!

I just hope I can keep breastfeeding...I know of some people who had to stop because of the reflux and switch to formula.

Thanks zane! They gave us Pepcid for her. I hope it works, but I'll certainly be calling them if I don't see a difference soon.

  • Poor baby girl! I hope she feels better soon. Good job being her advocate, mama!
  • Aw, I'm so sorry she's feeling so sick but glad you got to the bottom of it quickly!  Here's to hoping for relief very soon!

  • Oh man, I'm sorry Rach. I could have written this myself a month and a half ago. I swear one day Olive didnt stop nursing for an entire day. I lierally sat on the couch for hours just switching back and forth on my boobs. It was brutal. I cried. A lot. She needed to constantly suck or everything would come up which made her poor belly too full so it came up anyway! She's so much better now. Olive takes a form of Zantac. I noticed a difference right away. One thing to keep in mind: Olive has had to have her dosage adjusted twice now. Its based on her weight so as she grows she needs just a bit more.

    Hang in there honey. (((hugs)))

  • Thanks girls, I really appreciate  the kind words and support.

I'm so glad this week is short with the holiday so that Josh can be home to help. It's been pretty hard, but I'm sure with the medicine it will get better soon!

  • I hope Audrey feels better soon, Rach!

I'll I just hope I can keep breastfeeding...I know of some people who had to stop because of the reflux and switch to formula.

You might be thinking of me:)  I had to make the switch at 6 weeks but every baby is different you might be able to have success with the prevacid.  Thee RNP saved my life and my sanity.  If it makes you feel better Nate was able to be weaned off his meds @ 6 mo. and he was a super tough newborn (colic, reflux, ect.) Now he is a super happy baby.  Please take care of yourself Mama.  I know what its like to feel burnt and feeding every 2 hrs and oh yeah screaming for three hours....  Please feel free to chat on FB or if you want my # so we can chat.  Praying for you both!!

    Thanks so much Jessica!

Oh! I didn't know that you had to stop BF. That's great that he got off the meds at 6 mos. though! My neighbor has a little boy who needed his reflux meds for over a year!

Audrey actually seems to be doing much better today, thank God! I hope it stays this way:)

  • Yes I had to stop at 6 weeks; it broke my heart since I had my heart set on at least getting 6 months in.  I have learned how important it is to be flexible and have an open mind.  Basically I changed every aspect of my diet (caffiene, dairy, juice, etc.) and we couldn't find out wh he kept having a bad reaction to my milk even with medsSad

Anyway we had a happy ending which is we both ended up feeling better and doing great.  Glad to hear you are having a better day sweetie!!  Keep on smiling Rach!!!

I totally understand...I would be heartbroken too! BF is a big deal to me. I went through A LOT of pain in the beginning to get to where we are now and I'd hate to have to stop b/c of reflux. Hopefully that won't be the case since she already seems to be showing signs of improvement.

Thanks again:) I'm glad you both made it through that rough time!
