I've been using a tote bag I got at a conference as my "work" bag. It's a knock off LL Bean tote bag and while it's mildly functional, it's not at all cool and I want something with more pockets/comparments. It's also filthy and has shrunk a bit because it's off-white and I've had to run it through the washing machine due to pencil marks and coffee stains.
I'd love to get something funtional AND cool as my commuter bag. Ideally I would fit a medium/large purse in there, along with a change of shoes, along with a travel mug of coffee, along with my lunch (which tends to be bulky because I bring leftovers from home in tupperware containers). So I guess a tote style makes sense - I do like sort of long handles that I can sling over one shoulder.
I'm not a fan of backpacks but maybe one of those bags that has one strap that crosses over your chest?
What do DC Nesties carry their stuff in on the train/bus/in the car?
Re: What do you ladies use as your commuter bag?
I had a great Nine West bag that I used to use until it finally wore out. I loved it. I abused the heck out of that thing, using it for grad school carrying tons of books to and from the library.
I bought another Nine West bag a few years ago. That I like but I don't love as much.
I have a shoe drawer at work so I don't have to carry my shoes to and from work. It's great

ETA: Hmmm... as I'm poking around on the internet I think maybe I should be looking at "boarding" bags or carry one bags - those seem to be more versatile...
My commute now is negligible, and I wear jeans and tennis shoes to work every day and throw what I need in my purse, but before that, when I was back and forth to court all the time, I LOVED my Timbuktu bag. I bought the big one so it was big enough to hold my case files, shoes, meals, and whatever else happened to creep in. They're super durable and virtually indestructible, also spill proof (which I found to be helpful in my quest to not look like a hot mess). Highly recommend.
Stand up for something you believe in.
I use a large Orla Kiely tote bag. It was expensive, but worth it to me. I carried my last work bag for about 8 years, so I get my use out of it.
I wanted something big enough to bring my lunch, workout clothes and sneakers for when I run during lunch, plus some other essentials.
I really like that the bag is weatherproof and zips closed across the top unlike a lot of totes, plus it's cute. I have this, but in a different color.
Ah, the search has ended! Because I totally have $879 to spend on a simple black bag: http://www.overstock.com/Clothing-Shoes/Jimmy-Choo-Tilda-Black-Leather-D-ring-Tote-Bag/6196340/product.html
That is really adorable, and I would spend that much if I knew it was going to be really reliable/durable.
I haven't had it long enough to vouch for long-term durability, but it is definitely very well made. It's laminated cotton canvas, which feels quite substantial. It also has little plastic feet on the bottom, which helps protect it when you plop it down somewhere.
Her bags get good reviews online, and I have a coworker who has an Orla Kiely purse which she's had for years and years and you can't tell at all.
I'm rarely in the city these days, but when I do have to go in, I carry a DVF bag - its a carry-on tote part of a luggage collection, and its the perfect size for laptop, high heels, bottle water, snacks, notebook AND my Medela breast pump. I also like that the plum color goes equally well with my khaki-colored, gray and black suits

That pic makes it look hot pink...mine is more of a deeper plum. I've used it for probably 3 years for travel, in addition to maybe once a week trips to client's offices, and it still looks brand new.
Hmmmm... what do we think of something like this?

That is super, super cute.
I've been carrying the same Le Sport Sac travel tote (either this one or the next size up) for 4 years now and feel guilty looking for it's replacement because it is still going strong, I'm just sick of the pattern. If I could find another LSS pattern that didn't burn my eyes and was on sale, I would totally buy it.
I no longer have to ride the metro as part of my commute but when I did, I used this bag by Holly Aiken for years. They are totally waterproof and it never faded, wore out and was a good size for purse, work stuff and gym stuff.
Also, I have this one.
our bookstore sells these:
http://www.milanoseries.com/store/index.cfm/product/75_42/gina-tote.cfm
as well as other Milano Series bags. I have this tote, in turquoise, and carry it everywhere. (and I can get you a discount) we have the messenger bag, too, but I don't think it will hold as much as you're talking about... the thing I like about this tote is all the pockets, frankly, and that my travel coffee cup fits in an end pocket w/o spillage.
"What is a week-end?"
mmmmmm..... Milanos....... Now I want a cookie!
Longchamp Planetes from Nordstrom. It's thicker and better quality than the Le Pilage. Good luck!
