XP: iPad/Kindle & Cookbook question

I use my iPad all the time in the kitchen for random recipes, but they are usually from blogs and websites, not cookbooks.

If you had a Kindle/Nook would you download cookbooks to it, and use it?

ETA: Or would you prefer a hard copy of the book?

Re: XP: iPad/Kindle & Cookbook question

  • i have a nook, and i wouldn't use it in the kitchen....but i'm also the type that screen protects/hard cases every electronic i own....so, i would probably use a copy of the book, or, my laptop.

i can see the use of an ipad, though, because it's touch screen and has few buttons, cleaning it wouldn't be difficult.  the nook doesn't have very many buttons, but the screen isn't touch-screen, so i wouldn't want to wipe it down in case i got something on it.

the kindle has even more buttons, and i'd be afraid of getting something on that.

  • The best part about the iPad is that you can download textbooks with videos, verbal instructions, etc., to show you how to actually do cooking things (in case you're a novice like I am).  I think the Complete Chef just made an interactive cookbook, released by Inkling, for the iPad - could have the name wrong but it was one of the top selling iPad apps a while back.
  • I have an iPad, and love love love using it in the kitchen. I would totally download a cookbook to it.
  • This is the interactive iPad cook book I was thinking of:

You can buy it chapter-by-chapter and it looks like they have one for free, so maybe try the one chapter and see if you like it, and then if so purchase the other ones on an add-needed basis.

I have an iPad on my Christmas wish list since H bought me one and then has kept it ever since, and if I get one this will be added to my iPad instantly (in fairness to H, his entire job revolves around mobile / iPad applications for his company, so I can't really complain since he uses it for work... but still!).

  • I have a few cookbooks downloaded to my iPad. If you go through the apple store there are a few few cookbooks there too.

Its weird, but I'm more compulsive about making sure that my hands are clean before  scrolling on the iPad than I am with an actual cookbook. For some reason i feel light slightly dirty cookbooks are a badge of honor- like its actually been used and they arent for show.

  • I have a kindle and would not download cookbooks to it. My cookbooks tend to get splattered, floured, etc, and I wouldn't want to ruin it.

You could put it in a gallon size ziploc bag to keep it clean.

I use my phone (simple recipe) or my laptop (recipes that won't fit/are hard to read on my phone).

  • I think one of the things I love about cookbooks is just textural. I can flip through pages and stop at something that looks interesting and then run my fingers across the page in a way that's different on digital devices.

I use my laptop occasionally in the kitchen, but I don't really think I'd buy/download ecookbooks. I might get a Bon Appetit subscription for the Kindle Fire (if I ever get one), but it's still not quite the same.

Also, the new Kindles don't really have a lot of buttons. :)
