B got a cold about a month ago. He was kind of fussy/clingy with it for the first couple days. At 10 days, he still had it, so we went to the ped. He was fine and, according to her, on the "downhill slope." The cough stopped a few days later, but I've still been suctioning twice a day - getting some out, but not nearly as much as the first couple weeks.
This weekend, his eye got kind of goopy, and yesterday it swelled up at daycare. They didn't think it was pink eye - didn't even send him home - but we decided to take him to the dr today. Now, he has bronchitis, double ear infection, and eye infection!
I had no clue he was this sick - he's been acting completely normal and happy (even becoming more independent over the last week - he won't let us rock him except when eating now), sleeping fine (had one off day at daycare last week, but was fine after that), eating great, etc... No reason to think any of this was going on! Even daycare was surprised when I called to tell them he wouldn't be there today. She asked "Are you sure???"
And now, I get my para giving me grief about him being "so sickly" and a friend saying "Haven't you asked the ped about why he's sick all the time?" He's not sick all the time. Except for colds, he had a virus that lasted 4 days, one very minor ear infection that we got taken care of right away -- both 2 months ago; and this. Of course he's going to get sick -- he's 5 months old and goes to daycare! And they have 2 families that send their kid even when they are sick (and as long as they don't have a fever, they can't send them home!).
End of Mom FAIL and vent. :-)
Re: Mom FAIL
Your para needs to mind her own business and keep her comments to herself. She was overstepping her bounds. She worried you needlessly and made you doubt yourself, when you aren't doing anything wrong. It certainly doesn't sound like your kid is any sicker than the rest of ours.
Rest assured, there is no mom fail here!
Totally not a fail. You still have to learn his symptoms and how he reacts to things. It took a couple ear infections to finally figure out what I need to watch for. Austin sleeps like crap, gets all snotty, and gets gooey eyes. I thought it was just a cold the first couple times, but I eventually figured it out. You may want to buy an otoscope...my aunt bought us one and it's really easy to tell when they are infected and when they aren't. It's saved us a lot of unnecessary trips to the Dr when I thought he was having some symptoms and at least given me some peace of mind. Austin's only gotten sick, as in a cold sick, maybe 3 times so far, but every time he had an ear infection with whatever else it was that he had. And they can come on super quick too, so he may not have even had the ear infection for that long, so try not to feel too bad.

I had no idea those were so cheap! It is now on my Christmas list.
Ditto exactly.
Hope he gets feeling better ASAP.
Mason had an ear infection and I had NO clue, the only reason I took him to the dr was because he was puking. IF he hadn't been I would have never known - he was eating fine, acting fine, no fever.
NOT a mom fail!
Thanks for making me feel better ladies! I know he's a daycare baby - so yes, he's going to get sick more than if I could SAH. He's always been pretty laid back when he's sick, except when he had the virus (and that was with a high fever). Right now - even with everything going on! - he's playing with his feet and happy as can be! Only difference is he wants to sleep on me (which he stopped doing last week).
I do feel bad that he's sick, but now I dont feel (as bad) about not knowing! I'm not the only one!!!!

Kids will have times when they're sick. We all do. Don't feel bad. When we took Owen in for his hearing test he had moderate hearing loss. If we had not sat there and watched him take the test we would've never believed it. Who knows how long that went on. If they kids aren't complaining we don't know. Don't feel bad. Be glad it didn't bother him any more. You got a tough kid it sounds like!
That is not a mom fail. Eye infections are common at daycares... I've battled a handful of them. The ear infections can pop up overnight and I rarely know when my kid has them. K was a happy kid all the time so it was hard to know when she was really sick.... now she lets us know
When K was 3 months old I took her to pedi. Dr. was like "don't you hear this kid wheezing?" I felt 2 inches tall b/c I did not and she had to have breathing treatments.
