WWYD - Issue with student/principal/parent

Forgive me if this is an obvious question -

A parent emailed me and asked for my version of a dispute between a student and the principal that I witnessed. Clearly the student has told the parent a different version than the principal did (and I'm pretty sure my version will line up entirely with the principal). Would it be inappropriate for me to forward the principal the email and the response I'm sending?

Until this year, I taught college courses. I'm not used to parent interactions like this. If anyone can offer me a quick rundown of what is appropriate/inappropriate here in terms of keeping my principal in the loop I'd really appreciate it.

  • Email the principle FIRST. Just say, "I got this request. Here is the text of what I would send to the parent (write it below.) Would you like me to send it or would you prefer that I refer them to you?"

    This exactly.

  • I agree with PP. You don't want to look like you are going behind the principal's back so you want to keep them in loop. (I have come across people in leadership positions that if you talk to someone even though it is the same thing they would say will take it as going behind there back.)
  • Thanks for the input, I've followed your advice. Hopefully it all blows over quickly, it wasn't really a big incident to begin with!

  • So, the parent doesn't believe the principal? What a surprise. This is why I don't teach anymore. Parents entitling their children. If the parent isn't going to trust the PRINCIPAL, good luck when you have an issue with the child/parent. I would tell the parent that this matter is between the principal, the parent, and child, and that I am not getting involved.
