Spinning Class

I am starting my first spinning class tomorrow.I am a bit nervous, as I've heard that everyone feels like they're dying during at least their first few classes. Any suggestions or tips for a newb? Thanks, and enjoy your Thanksgiving!

Re: Spinning Class

  • I took spinning a few years ago... it was hard, but the good thing about it is that if for some reason you can't keep up, you can just sort of go at your own pace.  At least where I took it.

    I enjoyed it.

  • I love love love spin. Your butt will hurt big time the first few time you go but then stops hurting at all. I hated my first class and was told to give it five tries before I form my opinion....i was hooked by class four! Bring water and a towel.. You will sweat big time! Have fun
  • I tried spinning a couple of years ago and I really liked it, and I'm thinking of getting back into it. Make sure you get to class a few minutes early and ask the instructor to help you set up your bike so it's aligned properly. Also, you don't have to turn up the resistance every time the instructor tells you to. You may want to hold back and only do half of the resistance during the first class. No one else will be able to tell what the resistance on your bike is, so you can go at your own pace with no worries. Have fun!

Oh, if you're not used to sitting on a bike, your butt will probably be pretty sore during/after class. Those little bike seats are not comfortable! You will get used to it though. Like pp said, by the 4th or 5th class, it shouldn't hurt anymore.

This.  I was a spin instructor for many years, and it was always helpful when new students arrived a few minutes early, introduced themselves to me and let me know they were new to class and wanted some help getting their bike set up.

Definitely give it a few tries before you decide if you like spinning.  Only do what you are comfortable with -- if you aren't ready to do a standing drill, you can remain seated.  Same thing with increasing the resistance, speed/cadence, etc.  Have fun with it!  I hope you enjoy it, it's an amazing workout!

  • Thanks, all! I showed up early, and the instructor offered to help me adjust my bike when I told her it was my first class, which was a big help. I enjoyed it, and will most likely be back to get a variety in my workouts.
