A bald eagle flew right over me today!! She was focused on a dead critter in the road and was flying toward it, just about 10-15 feet above me....close enough to see her face. Gorgeous.
I've seen a few baldies from afar in the Pacific Northwest/Alaska, but don't recall seeing any in Texas...let alone from just a few feet and just a few blocks from my house.
Re: Kinda cool moment...
That was so amazing! I was so afraid it wasn't going to land on the person's arm with the kind of flight it took...lol.
A few nights ago a neighbor and I were outside talking when an owl swooped down got a critter and flew right.by.us. It was so close we both ducked. That was pretty cool, I cannot imagine how awesome it would have been to see the eagle.
isnt there one that lives somewhere along the east side of lake woodlands... i think there is a protected area of that shore because of the bald eagle. or am i making that up?
How cool! That reminds me that about a month ago a huge hawk flew right past the kids and me with a small squirrel in its talons and landed in our neighbor's tree. Made for an interesting talk with the kids about the circle of life. LOL
I think you may be right. A neighbor friend who saw my post on FB called and told me about the eagle(s) near the lake. She said there was one living across from Northshore Park but since they started building some condos/townhomes (not quite sure where she meant unless she's talking about East Shore or Riva Row) the eagle has moved to the greenbelt behind our neighborhood.
I just did a search for more info about the bald eagles in our area....pretty interesting! A pair has been nesting here for the last 10-12 years, and has raised a pair of eaglets all but one year. One site said there are just 19 nesting eagles known in and around Houston. Apparently, bald eagle nests are HUGE...the size of an overturned volkswagon beetle, so the next must be pretty visible. They've moved their nest a few times due to development...it's not clear just how protected the area is. It sounds like federal law mandates some limits on development during the nesting season, Oct - April, but one the eaglets fledge, protective status is lifted. Sad b/c eagles prefer to return to the same nest year after year. Oh, and there was a blurb on one site about how the eagles' nest on Lake Woodlands even survived Hurricane Ike and was used the next season.
Probably more than anyone wanted to know, LOL, but I got caught up and figured I should at least share what I found.
