Thanksgiving

Are you all celebrating Thanksgiving this year?

DH and I are hosting our company's annual Thanksgiving potluck at our apartment, and a surprisingly large amount of non-American friends are coming. We have about 16 people in total, so DH and I are going to rent a long table and some folding chairs. It's turning into quite an event. The group is about half American, 1 Canadian, 2 French, 1 German, and 1 British person. I'm interested to see what they all think of the feast.

Wish me luck!

We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!

Re: Thanksgiving

  • We are driving up to WI tomorrow when DH is done with work. Dinner with my parents, grandma, and aunt & uncle.I'm making the pie crust tomorrow and already worked on the cherry filling. Making rice krispie treats for my uncle since he's so picky. We are eating after the Packer game and I'm hoping there is a round of Trivial Pursuit after that.

Last year I didn't celebrate. We were driving 7 hours to Germany for BIL's confirmation. My thanksgiving meal was Burger King. If we wouldn't of been traveling I probably would of made a nice meal at home.

  • Yep! We are having Thanksgiving at my ILs house on Sunday. I am preparing a meal for 15 people all by myself! aaaagh! I am making my final menu decisions today and doing some shopping. So far, I have the turkey and four sides, a starter to go with drinks before the meal, a couple small desserts and a pumpkin bread to go with coffee after. Hopefully it all will be good. I'm a little nervous because this is twice as many people as I had last year and it is only my second year doing thanksgiving. eek. Good luck with yours! I am sure everyone will have a great time :)
  • Yes. I am hosting dinner here at my house for six of us, two of which are toddlers. Not a big party, but still great. Everyone here except D and I are British.

  • Yes, we are hosting Thanksgiving at our place again this year.  I cooked last year for all of DH's coworkers who weren't going home for the holidays, and the same this year, plus a few friends!  Turns out we'll be having 16 people tomorrow...had only planned for 10, so need to go out and do some more shopping tonight!

Also need to go to IKEA, as we only have enough table space for 6.  Oops!

  • Yes! DH is out of town so I'm heading over to a friend's place. She's Fijian but her DH is American. There will be 2-3 other Americans there and the rest are Canadian, Australian, and Nepali. I'm excited! I'm making sweet potato casserole, a pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling, and individual mini apple pies.

  • Yup - we're heading over to Saudi, our friend invited us to his parent's house for Thanksgiving. He also invited a lot of people from his office, and I think it will be majority American. I'm supposed to be bringing broccoli rice casserole, however I sent DH on a shopping trip yesterday and he claimed he could not find fresh OR frozen broccoli - so we'll see...:-

  • Not really.  Sad.  ;(  I might go to the store later and get some Thanksgiving type things so we can have a tiny celebration.
  • We're actually doing two Thanksgivings! :-) We're at an American university though, so there are lots of Americans here.

The first one is tomorrow night, once I finish up at work, and the other one is on Friday.

For tomorrow, I'm making 2 pumpkin pies and green bean casserole (all from scratch), and then stuffing/dressing for Friday. I am going to make regular white stuffing, and then hopefully some cornbread dressing!

  • Yes, but it's on Saturday.  Just a small group as I just don't have the energy for anymore.  I am the only American, with my DS.  These friends have been to my Thanksgivings before, so it will be nice.

  • Nope, not this year.   I'm the only American where I work, and I don't get the day off or anything.   Maybe I'll go out for a traditional Thanksfgiving curry....

  • Yes, my first proper Thanksgiving in 2 years and I have so much to be thankful for!  I'm starting the morning going to the Macy's parade with SIL, brother, nephew and dad in NYC then going to SIL's sister's house for dinner :)  I"m making a cake shaped like a turkey!

  • Yes (we are in the US though). We are going over to my parents' house for dinner.
  • Yup, we love Thanksgiving. For the last few years we've always had a giant feast at our flat. We can fit 10 people squeezed around our table and we usually scale all the food for around twice that and hope for leftovers! It's always a mix of nationalities and this year it includes my friend's parents who are visiting from Australia.

Starting the cooking tonight! It's always an amusing challenge to coordinate everything with our tiny under the counter fridge :-)

  • Yes, but we're in the States with all my family for a couple weeks specifically for Thanksgiving. I haven't celebrated Thanksgiving in a few years, so I'm very excited.

Last year we had just moved to South Africa and DH didn't even remember it was Thanksgiving (why should he, he's not American) but by the end of the day I was in tears because I was sad not to be with my family. I think I would have been fine if we'd made some fanfare of the day, even just roasting a chicken and celebrating together.

  • Oh yes. This is probably my last Thanksgiving in the States for a  while, so I'm going to make the most of it!!
  • Yup! Hosting at our place with some couples and then singles and geo-bachelors. Although this year I'm making turkey, gravy, and stuffing. The guests have to chip in on the rest of the side dishes. So far with what's been rsvp'd for I'm not worried.

  • We're sort of celebrating by going to dinner with some American freinds, but it's at British restaurant, so I'm not sure what to expect as far as food goes.

About 10 years ago we had Thanksgiving dinner in Luxembourg with a bunch of our friends at an "American" restaurant which was run by a Brit.  The "American Thanksgiving Menu" sounded perfect: Shrimp cocktail, turkey, with gravy and cranberry sauce, stuffing, green beans, apple pie and California wine -- but it was all just wrong.  Starting with the Ernst & Julio Gallo boxed wine and tiny prawns in a mary-rose sauce. The turkey was prepared like a beef stew in the gravy,  the cranberry sauce was actually a "sauce" the consistency of runny ketchup, and the "apple pie" was really bread pudding with apples on top.  By the end of the meal (and the end of our box of wine) we were all cracking up.  The food tasted good, but it was not at all a traditional American Thanksgiving meal!
