when to ditch highchair?

First, how long did most of you use a highchair with your kids? DD is happy in hers still and still fits well in it, but I think we need a booster chair for her to sit at the table one of these days. Plus, then we could have more seating for when another kid eats with us rather than just the one highchair.

Next, any great booster chairs you can recommend? TIA :)

Re: when to ditch highchair?

  • We have the FP Space Saver and used it until around 18m or so with E.  She wanted to just sit (on her knees) in the chair without the booster and when she started vocalizing that she didn't want to be in the Space saver chair is when we went without.  HTH's.
  • We also have the FP space saver.  I took the arms off it once we were done with the tray, but I don't think it was worth it.  E just sat on her knees until she was big enough to sit on her butt.  My concern with a booster is that she would want to get up and down on her own, and it she would end up falling.  We have a bar height table, so I was more comfortable with just skipping the booster.  She'll use them at restaurants, but that's it.
  • We also have the space saver. DD used it as a highchair til around 18 months or so, and the used it as a booster until around 2-2.5 years.

  • My 20 month old likes to sit in a chair on his own for snacks, but meals he still sits very well in his FP Space Saver.  I will use it until he's too big for it I think.  I have a Fisher Price booster that has a tray that I use at restaurants.  I never used a booster at home, went from high chair to nothing.
  • We used high chair until around 12-15mos (had space saver so they were at the table at around 12 mos without the tray). Any booster is fine.... I got one of mine from a nestie and one from a garage sale for $2. Does not need to be anything fancy IMO

  • Jameson got a booster seat (a cheapie from Target) for his 2nd birthday.  But that was mainly because Delilah was here and would need the high chair soon!
