Verizon 4G phones....

I think we are getting new phones on black friday...I went in and talked to them about what to get and not to get and they were really trying to sell me on getting 4G. But then I've had people tell me that it always switched from 4G to 3G, it's really not that fast, it uses too much data and too much battery, if you leave Omaha it's slower than crap, etc etc etc. I guess I feel like it makes sense to get it since it's the newest technology, but I've heard so much bad about it that I'm nervous. Anyone have anymore insight?

We decided not to get the iPhone. I think I'm going to get the Samsung Stratosphere since I really want a keypad. Anyone have that phone? DH wants the new Razor, but i doubt there will be a good sale on it since it's brand new.

Re: Verizon 4G phones....

  • As far as I know Omaha doesn't have 4G yet so you won't even be able to use 4G unless you go somewhere that has it (ie, chicago, etc.). It will be nice once Omaha actually does get 4G :) Until then, 3G seems to work pretty well but what do I know, I finally got a smartphone...haha. We switched to Sprint because the benefits outweighed what Verizon had to offer and was cheaper for more minutes and data plans.

  • Omaha does have 4G and its much faster than 3G.  We have the Thunderbolts and we don't really have any issues with them switching back and forth from 4G to 3G.  As long as you are not on the internet all day or allowing the phone to roam the battery will last through a work day.  Now if you are on maternity leave and never get a chance to grab the computer...the battery will die fast:)

Yea, Omaha has it now. And According to the guy at Verizon so does Lincoln, Ashland and those general surrounding areas.

  • I have 4G and DH doesn't. There is actually a huge difference so he ends up using mine a lot when we are together. I have the Thunderbolt too and really like it.

  • Well, I have the Samsung Charge, but there is no keyboard.  I really thought I would hate not having keys, but this phone has a Swype keypad, which I love (you just drag your finger from letter to letter, rather than tapping each key).  The difference from Omaha to DSM (4G to 3G) in speed was very noticable - so glad DSM just got 4G a few weeks ago!

Are they having good phone deals on BF?  H and I are thinking of upgrading our Droids as they are getting annoying. Also, do you happen to know if you have to change your plan?  Their website mentions 4G plan pricing on the phones but I can't find anything else about it.

I was told that everything will be on sale pretty much, and the phone I want that's listed for $150, he said I would probably be able to get for free on Friday. He also said that they are doing $30 worth of accessories free with a phone purchase. I don't think they are advertising though and he was very candid in telling me what the sales were going to be. He said that we pretty much just have to go there and see.

  • How do you know if you're on 4G or 3G?  My iPhone says 3G a lot up by my time, the bars, but then it will go away..so not sure if that means it's on 4G when that happens?

I'm curious too. I have the EVO and it's a 4G phone but mine always says 3G at the top.

If your phone is 4G, I think you have to change the settings?  Mine is under Wireless & Network, and then Mobile Networks.  Then I have to choose System Selection, and LTE Automatic.  I had to do this everytime I came into Omaha.  The Verizon guy told me it would automatically search for the best signal with Automatic chosen.  CDE just stays put with whatever it's on.  So, when I was in DSM (before they had 4G), I kept it on that, so it wouldn't wear my battery down searching for 4G.
