if you are not stationed near an MTF

Can you choose either Prime Remote or Standard? I have to have a very specialized surgery next year and we will not be near an MTF. There is a surgeon in our new city that specializes in the procedure I need. I need to figure out how to go about ensuring I can go to him for surgery.

Re: if you are not stationed near an MTF

  • When I moved home over the summer to have my surgery I had to be on Standard. Thankfully the surgeon & MFM I needed to see accepted TriCare since they were associated with the University hospital.

  • Thank you! yeah, my next step is making sure this surgeon takes TriCare. I have no idea what I'm going to do if he doesn't. I will be f*cked.
  • YES! sweet relief. After struggling with freaking Tricare website for an hour, the surgeon I want is in network! I think that means I can go with Tricare Prime Remote instead of Standard and then I don't have to pay any portion of my surgery.
  • Hi there!! I was going to suggest going with Prime Remote if you have the lead time to get the paperwork done. When we moved to Nashville, I went with Standard, only because I didn't give myself time enough to get the paperwork done. I was almost 20 weeks pregnant and needed to get in with an OB. But, it sounds like you are much more on top of things than I was. I hope the procedure goes smoothly for you!!!

  • Marni, is this something I can start from here before we leave? Whenever I've changed regions, I couldn't do anything until we got there. Maybe Prime Remote is different? And I just realized that with PR, I'm still going to have to convince a PCM to give me a referral to this surgeon, correct? He's pretty well known, so hopefully that won't be a problem.

I think you are right about having to wait to initiate the paperwork. But, unless you have a pressing issue that will require you to be seen ASAP (like my being pregnant and wanting to be seen and schedule the anatomy scan before DH left for training in KS), I think it will work. The paperwork shouldn't take too long to process, maybe two-ish weeks. Yes, you will need your assigned PCM to refer you. I would think think that you could call Tricare to see if they've assigned your PCM yet.

Crikey, do you have time to work all this out before you need to have the surgery? Personally, I would try to go the Prime route. Why pay money out of pocket if you don't have to. But, if getting in to see the surgeon is very time sensitive, Standard is an option. I guess your local Tricare office would be the most helpful. . .

  • Thanks! It's not too time sensitive. We're moving to Syracuse May 9 and I want to have the surgery around July 9 in order to be recovered in time for my fall school semester. Nolan's grad school provides a Tricare briefing, because there are 20 military members in the program, the week on May 23, which will probably answer all my questions, but I think I better figure it out on my own before we get there.
