Anyone deal with oversupply (breastfeeding)?

I'm pretty sure I'm makin' too much and that is why j is spitting up and is so uncomfortably gassy.

In the past, I've heard to pump a little before feeding, but that only solves the problem for that feeding and then I'm back to making too much again.

A few nights ago, I read to try feeding from the same side for 2 feedings in a row, but not only is that really painful (for the other boob), my supply doesn't seem to be going down.

OK, so back to original question:  Did anyone have oversupply that affected their baby and found a way to deal with it?

Re: Anyone deal with oversupply (breastfeeding)?

  • I did. I took a couple of weeks after we got home for my supply to really regulate. C was pretty spitty until this happened. I was told that you should pump just a couple of minutes to relieve the pressure, but also to car the time you do thus or you are just telling your body to produce MORE...

  • Yes.   It was all the way up in my armpits. It was terrible.

  • Most people have an "oversupply."  Your body just needs time to figure out what your baby's requirements are, it will subside when that happens.  For me, it was 3-4 months.
  • I remember around week 3 it got really, really bad to the point where he would start gagging and coughing every time I would nurse because of oversupply and "forceful let down". I started pumping and bottle feeding during that time and only nursed during the middle of the night if I could tell that I wasn't really that full yet (i pumped right before bed). After a few weeks of doing that it seemed like everything regulated and I was able to nurse more often without the poor kid choking and puking afterward. I know "they" say not to bottle feed so soon cause it will cause nipple confusion and shiiit, and it may, but it worked perfectly fine for us. GL!
