Stupid Thanksgiving question

Are fresh turkeys not the standard in the US? People all over the nest keep posting about thawing out the turkey, which leaves me confused.

I'll admit to not seeing turkeys in a lot of shops year round but I've also never seen frozen ones - or do people freeeze them themselves?

It just seems counterproductive for such a big piece of meat.

Re: Stupid Thanksgiving question

  • We're currently thawing out our turkey, it's about 3 times more expensive to buy it fresh. I vaguely remember that in the states as well, there were fresh ones but they were so, so expensive I think we always did frozen.

  • A lot of people buy frozen ones because it's cheaper.  We order ours from the supermarket fresh.  Picking it up today.

  • In London you almost need a mortgage for a fresh turkey - so we get frozen.  Turkey is very expensive over here.
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • Lots of US supermarkets give away frozen turkeys if you buy so much food in Oct etc.

My dad used to get frozen turkeys from work.  So yeah I don't think my family ever had a fresh one.

In general meat in the US comes from large factory type things, esp. true for poultry.  Free range is much more expensive, this is why meat is so much cheaper in the US.

  • Well, ours wasn't frozen when we bought it but we froze it ourselves. We bought the turkey for $0.59 per lb!!! The sale is still on but we decided to buy it last week because we're not crazy enough to try to buy the turkey the day before Thanksgiving.
  • I've never gotten a fresh turkey because it's an outrageous price in comparison. Sometimes ten times the price of frozen.

  • I've always had frozen turkey in the US and never thought twice about it. I am not even sure where to find the fresh ones, or that you could get it fresh.

Here in Belgium, I bought two fresh turkey breast "roasts" for about 9 EUR each. I'm the back up turkey meat, made easily in the crock pot Wink

We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!

I got the same thing, and I'm putting it in the crock pot. Could you share your recipe?

  • My local store has fresh turkeys. There was even a $10 off coupon if you bought the fresh one. I bought a chicken instead lol. Since I am celebrating Tday with myself and the whole chicken was only $3.19!!!! (manager's special). It is also a cage-free, organic chicken (a requirement for me).
