Anyone have one/seen one/have thoughts? I know it's not the best tablet out there, but we really can't afford an iPad or a Sony/Samsung tablet right now. I know it doesn't have eInk but we already have a normal Kindle, I'm kind of just hoping this will be a good investment in terms of children's books/other entertainment for V on long travel hauls (that kind of electronic help is starting to work on her) and since we are mvoing so much and can't bring tons of books with us..
I don't get why it isn't 3G capable while other Kindles are...but will I miss this if I've never had a notehr 3G device and I don't even own a cellphone? Hmmmmm.
Re: Kindle Fire?
My guess is that it doesn't have 3G in order to keep the price down. Amazon footing the bill for free 3G (like it does with other Kindles) would be pretty expensive considering all of the additional (and huge) content you can get for the Fire. I read that Amazon is already losing $10 per Fire it sells, hoping it will make up the difference on purchased content.
If you are an Amazon Prime member, I think it would be AWESOME for unlimmited movies and TV shows, and you can use it for games and as a reader.
If it came with 3G, I'd probably buy one.
I'm personally going to wait till they put out version 2. I would like to see a camera on it and a little bit more storage. So I'm going to wait since I don't absolutely need it at the moment.
But for your usage I bet it would be great for V to use. Especially for children's books. My library even does digital lending for children's books. Plus you can load up other entrainment things for the whole family.
We are signing up for Amazon Prime at the beginning of the month. I can get the student rate which means it's only $40 a year. We don't have cable and are not planning on getting it. So we are using a combo of Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant. Amazon has a lit better movie choice so that's why we are adding it. The have a bunch of Film Movement movies that I can't wait to start watching.

I imagine that the next version of the Fire will have 3G, whether the cost is included or you have to purchase monthly 3G as an option.
However, if you are an iPhone user, you can turn your iPhone into a wireless hotspot (though you will probably incur an extra charge from your carrier), so if you are in a 3G area you can just turn 3G into wifi using your iPhone. Might be an option....
...then you probably won't miss it. I've read that there is a way to "tether" with certain 3g capable phones but I'm not entirely sure of what that involves.
