Not only is it alive and back home, but it only cost $70.00 to get it fixed. The repairman wasn't exactly sure what was wrong, but taking it apart, cleaning it and putting it back together fixed it.
My best guess is that something got stuck in the feed and when I tried to get it to release the costume that it had eaten, it made something slip out of gear. While I was concentrating on the weird rocking of the feed, the repair guys were more keyed in on the horrible sounds the machine was making and trying to pinpoint where it was coming from.
Whatever the approach, it is working now and that is all that matters.
Oh, and just in case anyone may need to know this, the door to the bobbin housing only costs $5 to replace.
And there is a 25% off accessories coupon from Bernina on their website. I ordered a walking foot, since, you know, I got off so cheaply on the repair.lol
