The Sing Off

I just watched last nights episode.  Anybody watching this season? ...Liz.....

I love love love Pentatonix, I think what they do is awesome and I hope they win.  I know absolutely nothing about music technically though.  I really like the Dartmouth Airs first song but the judges ripped it apart.   I find them so entertaining, which is what i appreciate more than the technical aspect (again, because I have no knowledge in that area).  I surprised when they kept the Dartmouth Airs, but happy because I prefer them to Afro Blue.

I thought Delilah had so much potential.  I loved their very first performance, so I'm sad they didn't step it up.

Re: The Sing Off

  • I just finished the DVR of it and had gotten to the announcement part when I saw you posted this.  It was torture to not open it.

And this post is going to be long, so be warned.

Ok, as a former vocal mu!sic major, a choir member for nearly a decade, and someone that is immersed in music, both vocal and instrumental, every day of their life, please believe me when I say that they just kicked off the most talented group they've ever had on the show in any season.  I still cannot believe that Afro Blue was sent home. There is no reason at all that Urban Method should be in the top 3.  No reason.  For Afro Blue to go home over them is just mind boggling.  I honestly don't understand it.  One of the judges made the comment tonight that it feels like they finally got back to what they were awesome at, the jazzy, soulful, smooth type of music where they can just sit back, relax, and show off their amazing vocals.  My response to that?  HELLO.... YOU ASK THEM TO DO EVERYTHING BUT SING THEIR MUSIC ON THIS SHOW, OF COURSE THEY'RE GOING TO ROCK WHEN THEY GET BACK TO WHAT THEY'RE MEANT TO BE SINGING!!!

Here's where I admit my bias and music snobbery....  I do appreciate the 'rap-apella' of Urban Method.  I do enjoy the show tunes style of the collegiate groups.  But I absolutely cannot overlook sheer talent.  Urban Method does not have pure talent.  They have a bunch of people on stage singing how they were taught to sing by the radio.  Afro Blue was one of the smoothest yet technically difficult groups I've ever heard in my life.  So there is no way I can accept this.  I don't dig Glee style songs, and I realize that the show has to play to more than just my taste, which I'm assuming they're doing by keeping Urban Method.  But that doesn't mean I should be happy about it.

On a lighter note!  I adore Pentatonix almost as much as I do (did!) Afro Blue.  What they do with only 5 people is purely amazing.  They blend impeccably well, the guy and girl lead singers are fantastic, the bass and beatbox guy are stupid stupid STUPID good, and (as we FINALLY got to see this week!) the Mitchell guy has one of the most beautiful non-classical tenor voices I've ever heard.

Dartmouth Aires are awesome to watch.  I agree with the judges that I probably wouldn't want a full album of them singing, but I've enjoyed their performances every week.  But beyond that, Michael, the main lead singer, is perhaps the greatest undiscovered front men ever in the history of popular music.  I mean holy sh!t balls that guys has such stage presence and the voice to back it up!!!  Both H and I agree that he needs to get himself to Broadway and fast.  He would be sooooooooooo perfect on the stage.

So my top 3 would have been Afro Blue (winners), Pentatonix, and Dartmouth Aires.  I picked those 3 in that order after the very first show, and I stand by it 100%.  I sincerely hope they all come to Nashville and do a huge show like Streetcorner Symphony, Committed, and Whiffenpoofs did last year.  It would be epic.

But, of course, I'll watch next week.  If Pentatonix doesn't win, I'm going to blow up Ben Folds house.  He's only an hour and a half away from me.

EDIT: Grammar fix ('If Pentatonix DON'T win....'  Whatever, I'm on Thanksgiving Break) and to say that it's probably not healthy that I let a TV show get me this worked up.  Ah well.

EDIT #2:  I will not blow up Ben's house because he agrees with me.

'Dumbing down' is exactly what they made Afro Blue do, and the group paid the price for it.  This is what happens when you try to appeal to mainstream American music.  People who are used to listening to Ke$ha and Rhianna and Kanye West generally can't appreciate the brilliance of jazzy super-groups.

I agree to the bolded.  I thought it was a great mash-up.  And I'm not a fan of mashups, so that's saying a lot.  I thought the one dude did a fantastic interpretation of Mick Jagger.

  • Thanks for giving me the low down. All season when I'm watching I'm always wondering "what does Liz think?" Smile

I wish Urban Method would have gone home over Afro Blue. I liked them at first because they were different, but it's getting kind of old.

  • If Mike the rapper would just stand on stage and smile, I'd be all for Urban Method staying.  Cause that boy is pretty to look at.  MMmmmmm.

  • I'm late to this conversation, but I've been watching it all season too.  I love the Dartmouth Aires.  My love for them went over the top after they did the Queen medley.  That was just unbelievably good.  I didn't like Afro Blue.  Not because they aren't good, but because they aren't my style, but they definitely are better than Urban Method.  I was shocked when Urban Method moved forward.  I like Pentatonix, but I don't love them.  The sound they get from five people is amazing, but I don't like the girl's voice.  I can hear her voice over all the others I guess because it's the only female voice, and I don't like the tone of it.

Given all of that, the only group that really has a sound unique and diverse enough to handle an album is Pentatonix.  The Dartmouth Aires are only good if you can see them.  I think listening to them would get boring.
