We had Thanksgiving with my family yesterday... and it was just okay. They had decided that instead of turkey, to do a suckling pig. We thought we'd get the regular trimmings, just a change in protein. Well, the only "regular" Thanksgiving thing we really got was a sweet potato/apple/pecan dish my grandfather made. It was ah-may-zeeng! They did make a turkey, but it didn't taste quite right... like they didn't put the right herbs/seasonings on it or something. Kind of bland. The other stuff we ate was okay, too... rice, black beans, salad... just kind of ho-hum.
SO. Today, while watching a 2 1/2 month old, I get to make cranberry sauce, wild rice with mushrooms, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts au gratin, and find time to make a turkey in there, too. Good thing DH has only a half day today, so he can come home and help me. But a lot of this stuff is easy enough to make, so that's nice. We've taken the easy way out and got Stove Top, and canned sweet potatoes. But we really were missing the normal meal, and we wanted leftovers. So there!
Anyway, hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving and get your turkey sandwiches!
Re: Second Thanksgiving? Yes, please.
I'm all about tradition on Thanksgiving and I would be SUPER disappointed if I had anything different (well 1 different dish would be ok) on the day. I always look at the cooking magazines with the fancy Thanksgiving recipes and they look good but I know it just wouldn't be the same.
We had Thanksgiving yesterday at my parents house and did everything like I remember from the past. Not fancy but for me the perfect Thanksgiving. I'd recreate it too if I didn't get the traditional stuff.
I am glad you are getting a "real" Thanksgiving, I would do the same thing!
I wanted to thank you for posting the link for the Pecan Bar recipe. I used it and it was a runaway hit yesterday with my family! Everyone raved about them!
I want to do that today too! We had a fairly traditional dinner but there were not really any leftovers. And we want to do our own thing too. I'm just thinking more about cost. I was hoping the stores would put the leftover thanksgiving stuff on sale. Anyone know if they are doing that?
I also don't think I can do a full size turkey and I didn't see any like medium sized ones.
yum, sooo jealous!
