Soapbox: Shopping on Thanksgiving

While I know my one tiny opinion means nothing, I need to vent.

Who shops on freakin' Thanksgiving?
Who asks people to take time away from their families to come in to work, so that people can shop?

I'm so disturbed this year by the stores that opened on Thanksgiving, or for that matter, before 4 AM. This "new" consumerism is disgusting to me.

  • Your new siggy = amazing.

And I agree with you...I refused to support stores (unless absolutely necessar, like I needed tampons on Thanksgiving) that are open and take their employees away from family and friends on Thanksgiving.  I don't dig.

I think this is the worst part, stores rarely close and this is a family holiday. Our local target workers started a petition not to opens until 6 am but were told, they would just hire other workers.

  • My sister works at ON and she had to work yesterday 11-8. She didn't get to our dinner until 8:30 and she had to reheat leftovers for dinner. Sad She has to work today, too.

She said their store didn't do much for sales yesterday, so she's crossing her fingers that more stores were the same and that corporate will decide to not open on Thanksgiving next year.

  • I completely agree.  I've never been a fan of Black Friday shopping, but this year it's totally ridiculous, IMO.

  • This is the worst year I can remember.  I admit, I did some shopping yesterday, but it was online shopping as I was cooking my turkey.

When I was about 10, mom and 2 of my aunts went to K-Mart thanksgiving night while the guys watched football.  I don't even remember buying anything, we just wanted to get out of the house.  I remember then thinking it was horrible people had to work it.  I am so glad I don't work retail anymore.

  • I agree... Why does a store need to open at midnight either?  What was wrong with 5am????  Soon people are going to be going shopping the day before Thanksgiving!  Ugh, so ridiculous!
  • I agree. It makes me so sad to hear about people shooting other people as they leave stores with merchandise... Americans are way too materialistic.
  • Being one that had to work yesterday, I completely agree. Our store is only closed on Christmas and closes early for our Christmas party and for Christmas eve and that is it. Somehow we are all about family though. I was lucky to be able to get off by 11, but it still made for a very long day.

  • I don't think it's THAT bad. The people that I know that work retail all got paid double time, and had a choice of going in or not. My sister is a manager at ON and she didn't have her employees go in until 11pm- an hour before they opened. They set everything up the night before.

It's not much different than Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Kroger, fast food restaurants etc. being open... and they always are on TG. (At least here?) Nurses and doctors and such always have to work too... it's not like it's so far out of the realm of possibilities to have to work retail (in the evening) of TG. IMO when you work retail in the holiday season, you should know that it's going to be a possibility. *shrug*

  • I agree with Tiff! I don't think it's that big of a deal, but that's only b/c I have always worked holidays and missed many family dinners/parties! I went into my profession knowing that was the case, so it was no surprise to me but it does suck. We get paid time and a half for working or we find someone to work for/switch with us to get off if we can!
Finally a Mrs as of June 7, 2008
