Anyone been to San Diego?

DH and I are 99% sure our vacation is going to be to San Diego.  We just haven't decided if we need to rent a car or not.  On one hand, it would be nice to have, but quite frankly, I know I won't want any part of driving there, and God love him, but his driving might give me a heart attack.  Do you think we need a car or can we get away without it?  Being born and raised in Omaha, I am used to mass transit sucking!  Oh...and I won't ride a bus.

Re: Anyone been to San Diego?

  • We've been there a couple times on vacation, and have always had or rented a car.  I'm guessing your trip would be a lot easier if you had your own car.
  • I second getting a car. There are so many cool places to see (La Jolla, Coronado, Sea World....) that aren't really accessible without one. FWIW, I thought driving in SoCal was nbd. Just avoid rush hour and you'll be fine :)

I agree with this too.  I didn't think driving was that bad.  We had DH's iPhone for navigation, but as long as you have a map or some sort of directions, you should be just fine.

  • We just got back from San Diego last week!  We flew into LA and drove the coast down to San Diego, so we rented a car.  While the drivers there are horrible (no blinkers, cutting you off, etc.), driving there was no different than Omaha.  We took our GPS, and didn't one problem.

Even with our car, we did a TON of walking.  Not sure what all you want to do, but there is no way we could have done everything without a car.

  • We just went a few weeks back. I'm comfortable with mass transit (in other cities) and went knowing I would not need a car to get around.  I was wrong.  Rent a car.  Their mass transit is random and sketchy and their highway system is easy to figure out. Granted we have gps on our phones so that made it easy.

And if you've never been (we hadn't), take a harbor cruise. That was awesome and totally worth the money.

ETA- budget for parking!  We stayed downtown and it was $26 a day/night to even pull our rental into their lot.

    thanks to jennied :)

  • I would rent a car. I grew up going to San Diego almost yearly (we have a lot of family on the west coast) and there's a lot to do if you have a car to get around. I second going to Coronado and also driving a little of the PCH if you get a chance.

Honestly, I think that driving there is pretty easy. Yes, there is more traffic, but I find the drivers to be pretty good compared to other cities in the US...Omaha included.

The only time I think you could get away without a car is if you were going to stay in the Gas Lamp district and were fine staying within the area. That area provides a good selection of places to eat, shop and walk around in, however, I think it would/could get pretty boring without a vehicle.

FWIW, the last time I was there I was there for work, so we stayed in the Embassy Suites down near Gas Lamp-it's a pretty nice hotel if you're looking for one.
